This converter moves the 800mhz frequencies down to 400 mhz so you can listen on older scanners, there is no way to block the reception of certain channels made illegal by law a few years back, I will tell you since 95% of all traffic up there is digital and very few analogue calls, you won't hear much.

But if you have an older scanner and have police traffic in 800 mhz you can add this and monitor those channels unless they are trunked or digital now also.

I have no interest whatsoever in listening to cell traffic, but what would this do if you hooked it up to one of the newer digital scanners?

I don't think it will work on cell phones. The digital scanners only decode P25 digital signal. Cell phones, to my knowledge, use a different type of digital format.
There maybe some analog cell phones still in use that this may work on but remember it is illegal.

Digital scanners use only one type of digital signal processing called P25 or APCO25.

Digital Cellular is using either TDMA or GSM. Scanners do not pick up those type of
digital transmissions.

#1 is is against the law to listen to Cell Calls if you are not a party to the call

#2 it is against the law to manufacture radios for public use that can listen to Cell

#3 99.9 % of mobile phone calls will not be in the range that this device receives in

#4 If you bought it it would be back on ebay in about a week

#5 I have 5 scanners that can recieve 800 phone traffic and it is so boring I don't care

#6 I really don't care :)

You may not understand its (former) use. It would (still could but who cares) bring currently manufactured scanners that are blocked from recieving the CELLULAR band frequencies access to those frequencies.

It used to be that some scanners could be hacked either with hardware, software or both type mods into recieving these frequencies. Others just flat out could not receive these freqs without a device like this.

Any Scanner made in the last 8+ years should say except cellular when listing the freq ranges. This would defeat that limit.

It is also against eBay policy to allow the sales of these type devices, so it may not be there for much longer :)

One day those frequencies will be reauctioned for other uses as most of the current users go elsewhere for communications.

WOW! I haven't seen one of these in years. I remember seeing these back on '92 when I got into the hobby. These were expensive.

I'm going to be honest, there really isn't any value to having this. You can spend a few bucks more and buy a new scanner that will receive 800 & 900. Don't fall into the cell phone hype. 12 years ago, there was a world of stuff to listen to but it's all gone. I did 20 minutes of searching this morning through the "magic" band just for this message and found nothing in my area. Hasn't been in some time.

Those glory days are gone.

Thanks Kingpin, I will not waste the money on it. Also why do people bid so high on all the cell mod scanners if nothing is on those freqs.

Hi all,

"It is also against eBay policy to allow the sales of these type devices, so it may not be there for much longer."

For some reason the smiley didn't paste, but in any case it's nice you have that sense of humor. e-Bay allows everything from illegal CB gear to black market North Korean nuclear weapons, I hear that Iran has bid on a few.

FYI, 800MHz cell phones are dinosaurs, they're moving to microwave bands to provide better penetration into buildings.

Does this mean better penetration into your brain? Ah, another Communist plot to stupify American youth and ensure future generations of sheep mesmerized by the boob tube propaganda. Check my e-Bay ad for the latest styles in tin foil hats.

Because they don't know any better. They "heard" from somewhere they can listen in on cell phones and they will pay silly prices on equipment to do so..... and in some cases, you'll find the equipment right back up there weeks later after then found out there is nothing there.

I wanted an unblocked PCR1000 because with these bands vacating, something else may be moved there. I doubt it will happen in my receiver's lifetime though.

Its still completely legal to own and use 800 MHz converters. They cover all of 800 MHz, not just the cell band. If you have an old scanner that does not cover 800 MHz (like the Pro-32), you can use the converter to receive 800 MHz public safety on 400 MHz.
