WHAT IS THIS NOISE?!!!!

I'm having this "sporadic" problem when scanning. This horrible noise - sounds like something in between squelch and a whole lot of wind being blow straight into a speaker mic. It doesn't happen all the time. Although, it seems to happen more during the night hours. When it does start in, I will start to lock out the frequencies it comes in on. The only problem is is that it doesn't stop with just one frequency. It seems to start on freq's around 42.000 where my hwy patrol is (missouri) I lock them out. Then it starts in on freq's around 154-161 MHz. I'm constantly locking out channels as it happens. Freq's like mutual aid, sheriff, cities. Are they picking this up or is it something around me that's causing this. It's really horrible! WTF :evil: :evil: :evil:

Can you think of something that might turn on at night and only at night?

I have had this problem before with 40 MHz. sometime theres a whole lot of static and other times there is none. The only thing I can think of is maybe the ionosphere will allow more noise onto frequencies when the two regions combine at night. Beats me. :?

Also note this could be something from your neighbor and is coming through the power line.

problem

we have something like this going on because we haven't completely switched to the new radio systen. It happens only on EMS,i can't quite figure it out either but it happens on that only channels to the point where EMScan't get out.butt i dont know what it is or how to fix it.

I can't really record it. It doesn't happen all the time. I don't think it's something close because when I start to hear it and get up and walk to the scanner to lock out the channel, about half way there it will cut out like it's a faint signal or something. I don't understand it at all. How could something cause a static sound on several different frequencies. It doesn't just happen at my house. About a month ago, I was house sitting for my parents and they live about 10 miles away and I'm listening and the friggin static just starts poppin up on my freq's. They don't have any neighbors very close by so I turned of everything electronic in the house off and it still happened. I don't know???? Sometimes it annoys me so much like at Friday night at 11:30pm when the bad guys come out and the sound starts in and I can only scan about two cities, yeah, that'll probably get under your skin pretty quick.

So I'm not the only one with this problem then?[/u]

Yes static will appear everywhere and comes from many sources. You could buy a better scanner with good filtering perhaps. -AOR- is a very good company but very pricey. But as they say, Do you know the way to EBAY? :lol:

What type of scanner is it? Could be going south.

It could be alot of things. It could be intermod, images, birdies, etc. It can originate from the smallest places, like when I turn a certain light on, it will make a faint whirring sound on a certain freqency. It could be hard to pinpoint exactly what it could be.

It sounds like this is a handheld unit? If so, does it happen when your running on batteries and no antenna?

If it does, then it's a problem inside the scanner it's self.

not sure what kind of scanner you have.

On my Pro 95, when I was still using the Whip or the Rubber Duck antennas on it, I'd get quite a bit of interference at times.
It would come and go also.

It is a pro-95. I don't think anything's wrong with it. I've only had it for about 9 months. I've babied this one. My brother tossed my old 95 out the back door one night when he was drunk. A#@hole! You don't mess with a man's scanner! I flicked a cigarette right in his face and burnt the crap outta him. Serves him right but anywayz I've taken good care of it. I seriously doubt it's screwed up in any way. Usually when this noise comes about I've got it hooked up to a car antenna (that I wasn't using) that goes out a window onto to an awning. Maybe it's some interference from something but it happens when I got a stock antenna on it too. I'd prefer to just figure out how to stop it without the noise causing interference with my wallet too. What do you think?

Take the antenna off - run it with no antenna at all, the car antenna or the stock antenna. Then "listen" for a few hours (or days). If it happens, it's either the scanner itself, or something very local to the scanner (a water pump? oil burner pump or ignition?)

I have this problem with my scanner. The issue with mine is mainly during the daytime. Sometimes when a frequency comes in, it has a bad popping sound and you cant even hear the frequency. What could this be?
