What is this sound telling me?

I recently started hearing the attached sound on a VHF system I monitor. It occurs on some, but not all, transmissions. I would like to know what it is and what it tells me about the system. Could a system upgrade be in progress? If so, what type of system could it be? Thanks.

That sound is the sound of a toolchest falling down the stairs LOL, well just kidding but if you remember the movie home alone, thats what one of the burglars said to the other after it happened. Actually it is a user id code. It tells the dispatcher what radio it is. It was used by one of my local pds (Chesterfield Police) when they were on their old vhf system.

End of or beginning of transmission? Sounds like the signal to open up or shut off the repeater.

The high pitched little squeek is tone-remote. It is generated by the dispatch console and controls the transmitter at a remote location. Most of the time, the sound is filtered out but sometimes it sneaks through. It is not any kind of ID or access code.

It's definitely not the toolbox. Mine made much more noise when I pushed it down the stairs. Maybe just the hammer will work. ;-)

It's definatley a tone remote. The same thing happens on a local LE system here- the tones come through the repeater when the dispatcher talks over an officer. The clip you posted sounds like the dispatcher talked over an other unit and you can just hear the tail-end of what sounds like an MDC-1200 burst from a field unit.
