I am using a BCD436HP and live close to the LA Zoo. I cannot get the zoo talk-arounds.

Could someone please look at my attached hpe zip file and comment on it? I can get the LA City STRS and the attractions but not the talk-arounds. Is my structuring correct?

Thanks, Bob.

Talk Arounds may only travel 1 mile or less depending on land terrain type radios used I hear Family Service Walkies in my open area about 1 mile at best.
Thanks. I agree if they are low power but should I not see the Talk-Groups at least showing up on the scanner? I see all the other groups. I am searching this Favorite list only.

What talkgroups? The 800 MHz Zoo "talkaround" channels are conventional analog simplex, not part of the trunked system; there are no talkgroups to see. Are you receiving the Zoo talkgroups on the trunked system? Are you receiving the analog VHF channels from the Zoo?

If the only thing you are not hearing is those two 800 MHz Zoo talkgroups channels, then perhaps they just don't use them. That or the PL tones are different from what is listed. Or they are extremely low power and won't get out more than 1/2 mile from the Zoo (800 has less range than VHF or UHF). Or perhaps you don't have the Public Works service tag enabled in the scanner.

The 3 of us (minus buddrousa) discussed this last July. https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/los-angeles-zoo-talkaround-tgid-s.411092/ but closed to further replies.

one thing you may need to think about is how often they actually physically use that channel. If no one uses it, you won’t hear anything 😛If the zoo talkgroups collectively on the STRS system work for what they’re needed for, the talkarounds can exist as a backup.

Ah yeah, I knew this sounded vaguely familiar. Chances are they don't use the 800 simplex channels, as @kearthfan101 suggests they are probably backup to the trunked system.

Thanks. You are right. I asked this before.
GTR 8000 is probably right about the 800 simplex channels are not being used or I am too far away if they are being used. I am about 2 miles from the zoo.

I was hoping that someone locally is near the zoo and monitors them.

My question still is should the scanner show that they are being scanned? They do not show up at all as being scanned. Bob.

I just looked at your hpe file. I notice the talkarounds don't have a quick key assigned. Try assigning them the same quick key 31 and see if they show up. Also the zoo only has the one talkaround. The one you have listed as Zoo Talkaround - Animals, is LA City Animal Control, not related to the zoo.

Thanks. I set the QC to 31 and they still don't show up as being scanned on the scanner. I even set them up as a separate Favorites list and they still don't show up. I have all the required types set.

I called the zoo and got nowhere. They told me that the any of the zoo radios could not be heard!!!! What a joke!

I just wanted to listen to the talk-arounds for animal care. I can get the P25 TGID's for Zoo Operations but it is only for maintenance.

If a frequency is not still used it still should show up as being scanned as far as I know.

Thanks for that thought. It is possible. I got no hits at all today viewing the hits with Scanner Monitor and I never saw it scanning on the scanner. Tomorrow when the zoo is open I am going to scan it all day and use Scanner Monitor. Bob.

Keep in mind LA City has several additional licenses at the zoo address. They are not in the Db as they have not been confirmed, but could very well be active.

For example

I would also not be shocked if they utilize 3rd party licensed DMR system radio lease.

Thanks. Valuable info! I'll do some searching on these frequencies. My 436 does not have DMR yet so I can't search DMR's. Bob.
