• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Mine is my first personal followed by my zipcode then the name of my first pet and then the name of the street I grew up on.

That seems to be the call sign numbering scheme for my area.

Question

I am from Ontario Canada and we do not require any licence for gmrs. However we are not allowed repeaters either. But does that mean if I want to bring the family to six flags ECG I have to buy a 85 dollar licence just to talk simplex?
Also did I hear someone say that you also have to renew ham licences there? Ours is for life here.

Thanks

Steve

Seems like your rules and regs are pretty lax there. Especially for hams too.
The GMRS license is only for 5 years making it actually more expensive than a business band license.
The ham licenses are renewed every 10 years and you can't renew it early. You have to renew it kinda close to the expiry. (no more than 90 days- such a pita)
I guess you can apply for a GMRS if you aren't a representative of a foreign government but why not just use FRS if you're just using it around an amusement park? No license needed for that.

Thanks for the response. It is interesting to see all the different ways governments get money out of people. As answer to your question about frs, I don't like frs due to the low power and minimum range. I have a bunch of Wouxun radios ( pronounced " ocean") that I put in the gmrs and Murs freq in at 5watts. But if I put in frs freq into them, by law I think it can only be 0.5 watts and I am not sure they would be clear across a larger theme park.
I generally like to follow the rules as much as possible but paying $85.00 just to use them foe a day or two seems expensive. I guess next step is seeing if I can use the VHF Murs freq in the U.S. legally.

WPXJ598. Formerly KAE7927. Wish I hadn't let that one lapse accidentally. walruspwaterhead, MURS is limited to 2 watts, and you can only legally use Part 95 type accepted radios on it. I don't think the Wouxun are Part 95 type accepted for MURS or GMRS.

I could be wrong, though. A lot of people use the Wouxun and Baofeng radios anyway, but you did mention that you like to follow the rules as much as possible.

The Wouxun KG-1 is certified for Part 95. Not sure about any other models.
