Looks like an antenna for real low bands, like CB, HAM, etc.

I'd tell the guy you normally charge to carry-off junk, but you'll make a special exception in his case.

Then you might get a good antenna for nothing!

spacing seems very close and elements seem very small for a CB antenna

Looks like an old CB multi-elemant quad antenna. The visible bars are spacers to hold wire elements, which often are difficult to see. http://www.signalengineering.com/ultimate/cubical_quad.html

It's called a cubical-quad antenna, and like others already stated, it is probably cut to the CB band.

Please correct me if I'm wrong 'cause Im pulling this out of my '70s CB vague memory bank...they had 2, 4 and 6 box-element base antennas...weren't they made by Avanti and called "Astro-Beam"? I ran your basic 1/2 wave omni on mine.

The Gizmotchy has a round horizontal boom. The one pictured from the original poster looks to be square.

The Astro Beam was a three element vertical yagi.
