I haven't had much time to play with it since I picked mine up last week. Driving along I-95 between Richmond & DC I did get a lot of FRS/GMRS hits from people chatting between cars. Driving in downtown DC I got a few digital hits from federal PD vehicle radios...pretty cool to watch an officer pick up and key his mike and the pro83 immediately display 'found', though I had to turn on the Pro96 to hear him since it was digital. Seems to work pretty well, but wish it would display the "found" frequency a little longer.

one thing the pro-83 seems to have is good rejection - i can't get it to pick up ANYTHING that i'm not keying nearby!
that is, laptops, computers, screens, etc don't trigger "false hits" - so i guess that's good...
meanwhile, flashing "FOUND" is kinda dumb, as it only lasts for about 1.5 seconds before it continues.
on the plus side, it "opens squelch" when the person nearby is keying, so that's good.
so that's pretty much it for now - FRS! YAY!

I picked up a PRO-83 at 06:05 this morning. Our R/S shares a parking lot with Walmart and, sitting in my vehicle, I picked up several frenzied shoppers on FRS radios. Also a couple of already frazzled Walmart employees on their Motorolas.
The down side: Why does it display "found" instead of the Freq? You have to hit a key to display the freq AND I can't find any way to save the "found" freq....aside from manually keying it in.
There ARE a couple of things that the manual doesn't detail. If you push the FUNCTION key and the "stalk symbol" (FUNC+HOLD) when you're already in "stalk mode" it allows you to lock on to a specific band (LOW, HIGH, AIR, UHF or 800). You can do this in the "stalk" setup too.
CERTAINLY worth $59.99. I bought 3

so THAT'S what the toggle was when i kept pressing HOLD and then the button under it.
it seems if you are in "stalk mode" and you press HOLD over and over, you tend to toggle through the bands you are "stalking" (i hate that term).
anyway, if you hit the button underneath HOLD and then HOLD, you can actually cycle through the "stalking" (blech) bands.
...still, i haven't gotten crap on SS mode, and i even ran into the grocery earlier to pick up some food with NO HITS from ANYWHERE (Old Navy, the grocery on their Mot's, fast food, etc)

The FUNC, FUNC, E, works to enter the frequency into the next available channel too.
Picking up a bunch of UHF TV frequencies and not enough L/O's available (50 seach L/O available, only).
Many preloaded national frequencies are active in ch 1-150.

So far I love this lil scanner,.. yep I couldn't resist the low price and had to grab one. Had a hit on a GMRS while just playing around with it,.. found out that a few of the hunters around here have switched to FRS/GMRS instead of the overcrowded CB...
Also got hits on the Wal-Mart UHF... kinda cool to get a hit on the Wallyworld Management,.. and for kicks did some CB SS'ing,.. and got all kinds of hits on the local yackety Yack on CH 11, 12, 19, and 21, and one hit on 9, a MHP Trooper talking to a trucker about a drunk driver that almost tried to become part of his trailer.

Within 15 minutes, heard two hunters.
Also heard some railroad that I didn't even know I was close to!
Question- Why won't this Pro-83 "find" cordless 900mhz phones?
I have to be practically right on top of my phone before the 83 locks on.
Any ideas?

I was amazed when it found a railroad freq from about 3/4 miles away. I do get some bummer hits on UHF TV freq. 900 MHz phones use spread spectrum chan hopping VERY fast, thus HARD to hit one,... during a call, you might get lucky and hit it once,.. but the changes are so fast it has to search again,.. and by the time your call is up,.. its usually too late to hit again..... Nice experiment for you on your own phone,.. but as stated... don't try anyone elses phone. Also if you are near Military Exercises,.. some of thier radios do Spread Spectrum,.. and thier even faster than a phone.... Add in some encryption,.. and its out the window lol....
Special note to those with LTR Passport systems near.. this is the perfect scanner for those.. 10 Priority chans.. and a fast scan rate.

Wally World, Target, Meijer, a Steak and Shake drive through on the same freq as a Taco Bell drive through.
NOAA from 2 miles away, couldnt even squelch it out... (but I was moving, so it was a temporary problem)
DNR, Parks, and a Railroad frequency I wasnt even expecting while sitting at home. I am VERY pleased with the SS stalker of this scanner. I do like the larger display tho. Having seen a few of the older RS scanners, at least this is a step in the right direction.

Yeah the bigger display is nice.... would be interesting if they start doing this on all the scanners.... will make them easier to read, and especially newer ones that come out with alpha tagging.... I SS'ed an airliner from farther than I ever had talking to Center.... On the rest of my scanners, that com would have been a static headache.
