My wife would like a scanner for Christmas but I'm not sure which model to buy, I've narrowed it down to the Radio Shack Model pro-106, pro-197 or the pro 2096. I've read the 106, 197 will be on sale the 18th so that enters a bit in my decision. My questions to the Pro's, which scanner is the best value? What are the pro's and con's for each?
Thanks and Merry Christmas

Well depends on if you want a hand held or desktop. Handheld offers more portability. I've never had a desktop so i cant really give you pros or cons for that. I'd go with the hand held. Can do all the desktop can and is portable. But that's my opinion. And it looks like both are on sale for 399 right now.

yes :)

yes- depends on where you will put it at. Carrying it around the yard? Doing man stuff in the Garage? Portable works great for my Pro-96. I have a PSR-600 on my desk top.

You have a great wife for letting you get one. Most men have to beg for something new.

Check MN scanner threads for laws. I am not sure if you can or not take in your car.

I would go with the portable. Get a good leather case for it. Good rechargeable batteries and happy scanning.

Also depends on what you want to listen to. I regret my pruchase of the pro 96, doesn't pick up LTR which is necessary for the med-choppers here in st. cloud. Otherwise I love the portability of the handheld. A great resource on here is the wiki up top. Scroll down and look in the orange-ish box in the middle and look at all types of scanners. When you find one that fits your needs, keep scrolling down and available ones show up that are on ebay. You can find both new and used radios there. Hope this helps!

I have the pro-106...LOVE IT.......
Seems to decode p-25 apco much better than my pro-96 did.
Build quality and a more modern look on the 106 gets a plus from me too.
Can't beat the price right now either $399...(supposed to go on sale for $299 rumors till 12/25)
At $299 I'll have to buy another just because it's too good of a deal !!!!
