PRO-97 testing

All of the PRO-97s I have currently, I bought used. The first issue is WHO are you buying from. Are they reputable? I never received all of the components I paid for from another RR member. If the seller says they are the original owner, do they have: printed manual, black and yellow battery holder, belt clip, antenna? Or are they substituting the antenna, only suppying a PDF manual, or only have one battery holder?

Does the unit have scratches on it - especially the display? Does the display look good? One issue with these scanners is the combination volume/squelch pot - it seems that all fail sooner or later (more sooner). Has any (repair) work ever been done on the unit? Did someone add a discriminator tap (that tells you the case has been opened)?

Functionally, there are two EEPROM tests you can run, but be warned they will erase memory. Turn the unit on, when you see the sign on message, press 0 then 5. Wait for the test to complete. You can also run 0 6. The last test I'd do is to see if the unit communicates properly with a PC (both directions).

Good luck!
