what type of yagi

I have a uniden 996xt. Will any 800mhz yagi work, or can anyone rec one. My close tower is three miles. We have a simulcast system and I want to see if the yagi can help with this.

I suppose it really doesn't matter what yagi you use so long as it's for 800 MHZ. I just use an old cell antenna on the side of the house. And my towers are at least 10 + miles away.

I have been experimenting with an older UHF TV yagi. I changed it over to vertical polarization and pointed it in the direction of transmitters, a simulcast Phase II system about 25 miles away. So far I am receiving the system at good strength, even with the squelch on my 436 set to 5. The audio does, at times seem garbled. I am waiting for the snow to disappear to relocate the antenna and check further.
One benefit is that I receive all the local high band signals fine as well as some distant ones. All the local 800 signals come in full strength/

For scanning receivers, TV antennas are the way to go if you need:
- high gain and a directional antenna
- broad banded to include VHF freqs, yet great on 700 and 800 mHz (something you won't get on an 800 mHz-only yagi)
- lower cost for the antenna itself than commercial-grade yagi
- lower cost for good quality 75 ohm coax
- more mounting options (just be certain to turn it vertically as pictured in this thread)

For what you describe the Laird Technologies PC804N 806-902 MHz 6dB 4 Element Yagi Antenna | TESSCO is a good option coupled with in-line attenuation. This is the antenna that I use for in-county control stations due to its economy. It should work well if you are trying to kill LSM distortion or issues involving a timing line.
