Not being happy with the Home Patrol I am interested in buying something else. Just not versed enough in scanners to know which one.. Any help would be appreciated.. Thank you in advance.

996xt if you are looking for a base, the 396xt or psr500 for handheld.

second that. i would choose the bcd396xt over the psr-500 by a slight/medium margin. i still really like the 500 though. i totally enjoy the 996xt. not a fan of the hp-1. read too many negative/unhappy comment's.
do not own one though. waiting for something with tdma 2.

Not sure why these guys are considering the PSR 500/600 a Uniden scanner (per the thread title), but to answer your question, it would be the bcd396xt/bcd996xt.

however if you were to ask which GRE scanner would be similar/equal to the homepatrol, at this point in time, that would be the psr 800

What Uniden Scanner Would Be Second Best To The Home Patrol 1?

I have owned BOTH the Uniden BCD396XT and the BCD996XT until recently. I decided to sell my BCD396XT, since I was not using it very often. I bought the Uniden HP-1 for my car to replace the BCD396XT. Like others posted, if you want a good Uniden scanner other than the HP-1, go 396XT if you want a handheld and a BCD996XT if you want a base/mobile.

Just out of curiosity, what don't or didn't you like about the Uniden HP-1?

I second the PSR 500/ 600 for the better audio, and better vocoder.

the better audio ill definitely agree with, however i cant agree with the better vocoder. thats something that probably depends on the system being monitored. Myself and someone else both agreed that the psr 800 sounds MUCH better then the psr 500 on the ORION in douglas county nebraska..

I have both my BCD996XT and an HP-1 running at the moment on my desk. One is monitoirng an 800 MHz MOT Smart net system and the other a 700 MHz P-25, I am using ARC software on each.
Why two? Too much traffic for a single scanner. I am happy with both scanners, in terms of their RF abilities not much to choose between. The 996XT is "too complex" for most persons to program from the panel by key strokes, it is only practical with software. I use ARC XT Pro to program and Pro Scan to log.

You don't say why you are "not happy" with the HP-1, I like mine so much I bought a second one for another room here.

Lep do you like it so much that you will buy me one for my one of my rooms? JK

to the op, if you want something similar to the HP then my vote would be the PSR-800.

I have been scanning since my regency 8 channel with crystals and have owned everything inbetween and this is my favorite handheld.

SD card database is awesome, recording all channels is awesome, reception is great, digital decoding is wonderful here in San Diego, and build quality is good (minus the known issue with the front plate which GRE will send you a new one), and it decodes the newer apco 25 systems.
