Just a quick question,

I see most products have their own clients (ProScan, Butel etc.). Will all of them simple stream with basic players like Winamp, Media Player, Realplayer, ect?

Thanks!

The audio streaming is a function of your computer, not the scanner. The scanner pumps out the audio through its own speaker, or, if you want to 'stream' to the internet, or just listen to the scanner through your computer speakers, you use a cable to connect the computer audio card to the headset output from the scanner.

Winamp, Realplayer and all the other different computer players take that audio signal and manipulate it in their particular format.

All of this is completely different from software by Butel etc. These software programs let you control the scanner from a computer. At least the ARC996 software from Butel that I use works this way. It doesn't determine things like audio format for Winamp or Windows Media Player. Butel is concerned with controlling the scanner functions, not the audio once it leaves the scanner.

Hope that makes sense.

Unless I'm too tired to read the question correctly, I think he was asking if he could put his radio online and have others listen to it with Butel and Proscan in Winamp etc.

If you use Butel's software, I believe you need Butel's software to listen, and the same goes for Proscan.

I use Icecast to server, and Oddcast and Simplecast to encode my feeds.
Listeners can choose their program and listen in mp3.
Any program that will decode mp3, can listen to the online feed.
This includes winamp, windows media, itunes, aol media.......

Thanks, that was my question, sorry for the confusion.

So, let me see if I understand correctly. I am limited (of sorts) with Butel and Proscan on the client end, but with a generic streaming software most media clients will work?

From the Butel Website:

ARC-EazyStream Server registration is only $49.95, ARC-EazyStream Client, required to listen to server streams, is free.

I think required is the key word there!!!
The method I use is the best price of all, free!

Yes, most "generic" streaming software packages utilize MP3 streaming. So most media players can utilize this format, reaching the widest audience.

The other formats, Butel, ProScan, Teamspeak, etc., are proprietary and require "special" software.

Any recommendations on the Generic brands?

I have used IceCast as my server, and simplecast as the encoder, simplecast is not freeware. Although I believe there are a few mentioned above such as Oddcast and Shoutcast that are freeware. You can also stream with windows media encoder which is freeware but as far as I know only allows windows media player to connect.

I found Windows Media to have one hell of a lag time on it.

Simplecast is not free. It is $60, but it does do a nice job of archiving the audio and breaking it up into hourly chunks.

Anyone know of another solution to break down an hourly archive? I paid the $60 for that feature, and it was the only alpha tag solution at the time.

Liquid,
Just curious as to how many listeners you get on you systems? www.w2lie.net is a nice site BTW.

Thanks!!
I never really figured out the stats, but I have maxed out a few feeds! That was one of the projects I wanted to take care of when I could dedicate some real time to it.
With my luck, I'll add Apache and PHP, so i can run AWStats or bblcone...and I'll screw everything up.

I think the only time there is no one listening is when I reboot the feed!
