I was listing to the scanner at work. Picking up calls okay (heard a hit and run, shots fired, etc). Then I pulled up to a VB Police Officer in his car. While we were talking a call came over his radio. I didn't hear anything on mine. I have the TG (1st/2nd precint with TAC also) and all the channels programmed in.

Most likely, he was recieving a talkgroup other than the dispatch or tactical. Could even be a seperate radio on another system.

Of course, if he was transmitting, it's quite possible a close transmitter like that would have desensed your receiver into silence.

did you have the scanner set to search for other TGs or only scan the ones already in it?

I just had the scanner on the trunk mode and tg that were programmed in. He wasn't transmitting. I heard it on the mic on his collar. He said the car radio was on 1st pct and the portable was on 2nd pct.

Was your scanner stopped on another talkgroup at the same time? If so, it could have simply been "busy" tracking another talkgroup while 2nd was active. You can always set a specific talkgroup as priority to help prevent this in the future, but you have to choose the talkgroup that you want to take priority.

Now that we have a little more information I agree with Jason. Of course, not being there we can only speculate; your scanner tracking another active talk group is the most logical reason.
