Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Ones less expensive then the other one but im being careful with what im going to upgrade to.

Just wondering if anyone ever used a GP380 at all.

What is so different about em?

Do i need CPS for both or RSS just for one of them? Just need to know from someone else that already has "preferrable" a GP380 or HT look alike radios for what i want to say.

Motorola knock off or cheaper brand?

GP380 is basically a European version of the HT1250, it has more channels and 5 tone signaling, but it requires the European version of CPS to program it.

Thats what i thought, I was about to get a GP380 and kinda wondered wtf.....

This guy on ebay was offering the radio and software but :) I didnt get it haha.... dont wanna be stuck with a radio that wont work in the US.

Then again its like that other HT1250 thats from europe that needs to be converted by motorola to work in the US... for 300!!!

Is there not a way to overwrite the codeplug that is from europe with a US codeplug from another HT1250 or are we going to see the "radio will reject" because it doesnt match the serial number.

I have both the 1250 and the 380.

The 1250 can do 128 channels with zones. The 380 can do 255 channels with no zones (IE, you have to spin the channel knob a thousand times to change through all channels).

The 1250 can do MDC, Quick Call and DTMF signalling. The 380 can do 5-tone signalling.

The 1250 and the 380 use *totally* differet CPS. The 380 CPS is similar to that of the ASTRO25 radios in that you assign each channel's frequency/name/PL, etc... But have to assign each channel a personality which determines such things as signalling, etc.

The 1250 let's you edit scan lists on the fly (add ad delete entries), however the 380 does not (once you set it in CPS, that's it).

One VERY cool thing about the 380 is the ability to do custom signalling. You can customize the frequencies and duration of the 5-tone signalling. On my radio, I have it set to 'signal' on PTT with the same sound a tone remote set uses. Dorky but kinda cool.

You can also set a button to transmit a set signalling word (called a Telegram). I customized the tones and duration so mine sends the same alert tone a Motorola console does (the hi/low/hi/low/hi/low thing).

If you're after maximum chanels and don't care about zones, or the ability to edit scan lists, or MDC ID display, or Quick Cal alerting, the 380 is for you. It would make an *excellent* ham radio for someone who wants a no-BS radio that works fantastic and can put up with a heck of a lot more than even the best ham rig out there.

I have an XTS2500 with field programability, but I still wouldn't trade my 380 for the world.

This is actually a very nice radio. The Hong Kong dealers are all pretty legit. I can not speak to the legality of these radios being used in the U.S. as they are not type-accepted but I believe as long as you don't mis-use the radio you are fine.

I have seen the CPS that comes with the radio and it will run on your U.S. Windows machine. Programming is not all that bad. You just have to get the hang of it. If you are use to the U.S. Motorola CPS then you may hate it but it works and works well enough.

HT 1250 vs GP 380

I have just bought a GP 380 radio offing E-bay for a eurpopean company. It comes with the programming software. Will this radio work in the United States? and will the software work in the United States? Iknow the radio is close to the HT1250. I plan on using it as a personal radio. Just want to have it and use it when Im off duty. I been reading about the CPS and Firmware problem. This is all new to me. Can somebody explain to me about this?, and if the radio can be used in the united states?, and if the program software will work on a american computer?

G360's/380's

Does the GP360/380 Accept the U.S version DPL/PL tones? I was thinking about buying one of these but no one answers my question. So I figured I would jump on here and see if anyone knew. Thanks

It should but i cant second guess that, im saving up for an Ht1250 instead unless you get it flashed, then maybe it would work for the DPL/PL but im just a bit frisky about the 360 and 380...

Thats what I was wondering if it would be better to do. I did find a place on the net that had that software for the GP300 series radios and it does have a spot on there for the DPL/PL tones but was afraid it wouldnt work though on our system. I might just save and get the HT1250 that a buddy of mine has and know that it's in working order and will work on our system. Hate to spend the money and it not work. Even our local moto tech said he wasnt sure either

Im still thinking about buying one off ebay this week, just not sure if it does MDC1200.... though it only says quick call and DTMF, thats just not enough info for what they have listed, might as well continue saving up for a VHF for MURS and a scanner for PS

With all that said, what you see on Ebay, if it is listed as a GP380, it is a GP380. They often have the incorrect specifications. If you look up the GP338's, they're are almost 4 times more than the GP380 and pay attention to their specs. They are just listed wrong for the GP380 on ebay from the HK dealers. Go ahead and pick up a GP380, you won't be dissappointed, even if you leave it as a GP380.

Edit:

Adding infor for the HT1250, also from the MOTODEV site:

Hey guys

Hey I just bought one of these GP380's off ebay, and I am impressed with everything i recieved from the purchase, the only thing being is that when i put the disc in to computer to program it doesnt work.....so im curious as to how the other members on this site programed im prettty sure that i wont be able to bring this radio to my local radio programer because he probably doesnt have the software to program it, nor will he want to....So if someone could shed some insight i would love that, thanks and by the way im going to be using this radio in the U.S. thanks again WLTEMT

Gp380

I would love to get one of these to make it into an HT1250, I believe it can be done !! I have fixed many problems with HT/CDM and this would be a new challenge. I think I have tools to make it work if one comes along cheap. I thought I had 2 of the UHF model but the guy sold them before I could get the money in the mail. I have been using the HT1250 CPS since 99' and the GP380 CPS not at all like the US or Latin versions .

Will the software that is supplied program the GP340/GP360/GP380's in VHF and UHF? I know this sounds like an odd question; but, at that price anything could be possible.

I really like my GP380 I purchased it from the online Ebay dealer digital_come08. It works fine the only issue that I have found is that for some reason I cannot get it to take the narrowband frquencies which from what I hear it can be transformed into a ht1250 which Ive read several forums of people that have done it but I cant seem to get and response. Of all the other wideband frequencies it Tx and Rx works fine. If anyone has any ideas or know of any work arounds for this radio please let me know I really would like to be able to use it for the 2013 FCC mandate for the narrowband frequencies. Thanks. sorry had 2011 instead of 2013.

I'm interested in buying a GP338.

Is it true that the GP330 does not have MDC1200?

Check up a few post, eu versions just don't really support mdc unless you flash it but most shops won't really do that for what everyone says. id just go with an ht.
