Actually, I think you should use the Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft.

You can use that too but its much harder to setup. Shoucast with Winamp is soooo much easier to setup.

Not to mention free and multi platform. You can run shoutcast and a media player on linux and keep it running on a 233 without a problem. Try doing that with WME.

Not gonna happen.

Trust me on this one. Head n over to the Spacial Audio Forums and you will see I spend ALOT of time in this field.

Besides untill you know for sure its something you want to do why not go the free and easy way.

Windows Media Encoder delay is about 5 seconds or so... It is my understanding that Shoutcast has a much greater delay.

From my limited dealings with shoutcast, it appears to me there isn't as much control and options as WME - don't quote me though, I could be wrong.

The delay for Shoutcast is dependant on many many factors. There is no real wayy to set the delay. WME claims to be able to set it but in tests I have set it at 5 seconds and have seen it range between 3 and 47 seconds. So it isnt exact. But then again any stream online is never really going to be able to be realtime.

Who really cares about the delay if you are listening to something that isn't even in your area??? Yes Windows Media Encoder does have more options but like I said it is harder to setup and you need a web host in order to use it. Oh also Windows Media Encoder REALLY eats up the computer resources almost to the point that you wont be able to do anything else on the computer.

T90A is wanting to know how to set up a feed, I was just pointing out some of the pros and cons of what I know about WME, maybe he would care how much of a delay his stream is ??? - by the way, I use WME and it works very well for me - doesn't eat up too much of my resources - however I am fortunate enough to have a dedicated computer for just that. Not sure what you mean by needing a web host, all I use is my computer, internet connection, and that's it !

I don't believe WME is too hard to get setup - maybe shoutcast is easier, maybe not - differences are like between a chevy and a ford... they're different but do the same thing !!!

Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth - everyone has an opinion and that's mine !

Shoutcast delay

I've found personally that most, if not all of the delay is introduced by the client playing back the stream. If you mess with the various streaming settings you can often lower the delay to a second or two.

Are you talking about Windows Media Encoder ?? If so, I'd be interested in knowing how this is done.

I'd like to hear how this guy does it:

http://wmsr.tripod.com/

I don't know the site or area, but like the display of current frequency, etc. that is shown. I assume you'd need a scanner with some output/control functionality so that you can get the video put together.

He is using WME and a computer controllable scanner. Again go here to learn how to do it. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/LiveScannerAudio/

It looks like he is using a BC245 with 245int software.

I had a live scanner feed from my home PC a few months ago but after I installed Win XP Service Pack 2, the feed no longer worked. I haven't messed with it in so long I have forgotten what the specific problem was.
At the time I was using Media Encoder and it was working great, although I did notice slower overall performance when the feed was running.

Gonna mess with it some today and get back up to speed, maybe figure out why it quit working and post the specifics in case someone here may know what to do.

When you installed SP2 it automatically started up the internet connection firewall. Turn it off and you will be fine. Of course make sure you have a good firewall in place of it.

Sygate personal firewall is a good one.

ZoneAlarm is the best, it uses cryptography. You can't beat that.

T90A,

Check out scancapecod's website, most specifically his tutorials on setting up a scanner feed. Here is the link http://www.scancapecod.net/cgi-bin/...86b1bcb9805d180c329fc;act=Page;p=feedtutorial

These tutorials I feel are the best simply because they are written exactly STEP BY STEP and also include screenshots to double check your work.

Icecast/Shoutcast/simplecast require much less system resources than Windoze Media Encoder. As is true for darn near everything Microsoft, it is a resource hog.

Although I agree with the gentleman who suggested that the delay doesn't matter for folks listening from out of the area, Icecast has little delay (on average about 1-2 seconds).

If you have a computer controllable scanner (uniden/RS) you can provide a feed that displays the frequencies or channel names as metadata to the audio player. Meaning that you use the same bandwidth as an audio only feed, but the listener has the luxury of seeing what channel (frequency) the scanner has stopped on and consequently the audio you are listening to. The online feed would run either icecast or shoutcast as the server and simplecast as the encoder. Listeners will need the free WINAMP player to view the "Alpha tags" concurrently with the audio.

Here is an example (opens in winamp): http://eldoscanner.hopto.org:8002/edc.m3u

As mentioned before, the guys over at the Yahoo group, LiveScannerAudio will be more than happy to help you out.

Last I checked Zonealarm isnt free. Yes yes I know neither is Sygate. But the free version of sygate is more than powerfull enough for the average user.
