To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

These are the correct style (Almost) of Swivel Base I am looking for,
But, I would like to purchase one with screw thread to connect the coax to the antenna.
Why, Where the Base / antenna is going is on top of a tall building with limited
access for maintain of the equipment.

Unless you love Antenna Specialist ball mounts, I put a Hustler Stainless Steel Ball Mounts SSM-2 on my truck, and have not been sorry. I use Hustler resonators and a stainless whip when on business band. Mounts on the driver rear fender on a Silverado.

These are mobile antenna mounts for mobile antennas. Not base antennas.

The A/S ball mounts had a slightly larger mounting footprint and ball compared to the Hustler. There were also several grades from bare aluminum or mystery metal to black painted and also stainless steel. However, the best ball mounts I've seen are the Motorola units sold for the MOBAT HF radios. The insulators on those are machined from solid Delrin and the insulator protrudes quite far through the mounting hole in the vehicle for better insulation for high voltage and they are very heavy duty.

If you want something heavy duty, check out Fair Radio for the military grade antenna mounts. They also have the AS-1729-MS, used, but can be cleaned up for $14.

Here is one of my two Motorola MOBAT HF mounts. Unlike most ball mounts designed for CB or VHF low band, these are for use with Motorola/MOBAT high power 500W HF rigs. The insulator is Delrin and its machined instead of brittle cast or molded plastic. The insulator is also much thicker than other brands. These are very pricy new but I got these cheap over the years on fleabay.

Not the same one, the MOBAT version insulator is black and machined, the one you show looks like a plastic casting. I'll post a pic of the MOBAT tomorrow.

Lots of good information to conside,
I am going to use this swivel mount and an 102 inch whip combination just to monitor
what ever I can copy on the VHF-LO military bands.

You will never get a single whip to perform well over the entire VHF lo range or even 30-50MHz. This is not very pretty but I would recommend this for good consistent coverage over the 30-88MHz range mobile.
