I live in Minnesota and I'm

18 miles from the Crystal Airport
20 miles from the Anoka County Airport
and 32 Miles from the Mpls/St. Paul Airport

My questions are:

Am I close enough to really monitor whats going on?
What sould I expect to hear?
How active should the Air Comms be?
Any frequency better than others?

I do have a 2 meter ISO Pole mounted 20' above grade if needed but would rather use the whip if possible. I have never tried to listen to the air comms so its new to me.

Jay,

Mlevin is right you will most likely only hear the pilots unless the lay of the land is in your favor. I live within 30 miles of 5 airports and 1 Air Force Base, I have a Scantenna @ 25', during overcast days I can hear (faintly) the ground side of the comms. On clear days nada. But don't let that deter you from monitoring aircraft traffic. You never know what you might hear.

Good Listening...
