Ironically, it was done because of interference from Nextel channels near the public safety bands. They had to pay for it (later it was Sprint). Sprint is now in the process of rapidly de-constructing the Nextel system and plans to use the spectrum for broadband data a.k.a 4g LTE. At least everybody got consolidated chunks of spectrum out of it.
All of that activity keeps us on our toes re-programming all of our scanners, right?
