Wheat Ridge Police say Tyler James Martin, 35, ran 34-year-old Amber Kathleen Creemens' car off the road near 35th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard on Tuesday night. A witness then watched Martin get out of his car, walk up to Creemens's window and shoot her three times.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friday afternoon, 9NEWS learned of a barricade situation in northwest Chicago in the Logan Square neighborhood. Wheat Ridge investigators say they believe the person barricaded in that home is Martin.
Police say Martin was from the Chicago and has family and friends there.
The standoff in Chicago began around 4:45 p.m. Mountain time.
Lisa Stigall with Wheat Ridge Police says no one has actually seen Martin, but police in Chicago believe it is him.
Investigators believe he is inside the home alone.
"Things are a little sketchy and we are relying on the information from the Chicago SWAT team and their PD, so it's kind of a second-to-third-hand information at this point," Stigall said.
Stigall says police have been looking for Martin in Colorado, Missouri and Illinois.
Police say Creemens' current boyfriend was on the phone with her when she crashed. He was also on the phone with police and officers say they were just blocks away when she was killed.
Police think Creemens and Martin had been dating for eight years, but had split up in August. Although there are no records of a restraining order in this case, court records suggest the victim had become increasing worried about her ex-boyfriend's behavior. The victim's current boyfriend has told police that "he had put (the victim's) bills and telephone in his name so that Tyler could not find her."
Martin was last seen driving a 1998 Mercury Mystique, dark green, with license plate 720-SXA.
