I am planning on purchasing the BCD396XT this year but was wondering…when to the manufactures release the new models? The only thing that gives me pause to purchase is the current model not decoding P25 Phase II. I will be monitoring Ohio MARCS.

Uniden typically announces new radios around 6 months before they're ready to be purchased, and if I recall correctly they usually show off new models around the time of the tech shows.. one's in January but they may have another show later in the year.

Nothing has been announced so far this year so don't expect to see anything before Christmas, if at all this year.

Just my luck, but since I bought the 396 about three weeks ago, any day now :D....

Nikon has done that to me three times....

Or maybe four....

If I ever break down and buy a Home Patrole then a new scanner will come out. I never got the PSR -800 and GRE shut down. Glad to hear I am not the only one who buys something the a few months later the next best thing is coming out. I have been really happy with the 396XT/996XT scanners. It can be different for everyone but they work great for me throughout the state of California.

Look at the bottom of UPMAN webpage explains it all I feel-
http://info.uniden.com/twiki/pub/publish/upman.html

When is Uniden going to (fill in the blank)? Why hasn't Uniden made a scanner that (fill in the blank)? and so on
This is one of the most-asked questions that is almost never answered, so I'll answer it here.
...Release a new scanner

When we are ready to announce a new scanner, we'll announce it to everyone, and it won't be due to someone asking either in a forum or a private message. it will be because we are ready to announce a new scanner. We don't announce right now, right this minute for a few reasons:
1. We aren't ready to announce it, yet.
2. We don't want to give our competition a heads-up that we have a new model with particular features coming out...the longer we wait, the longer we maintain our competitive advantage with new features.
3. In the development process, as features are tested and refined, sometimes features are added, and sometimes features are dropped. Early announcements create a risk of "false claims" criticisms once the product is released.
4. There are some legal restrictions on promoting products that do not yet have certain approvals. Waiting until those approvals have been granted (or are just a day or two away) reduces greatly the complexity involved in making any such announcement.

RoninJoliet:

Probably RS, but who knows what's likely to come out of China, like those $50 2M/450 HT's?

The other reason, unstated, is what happened to Osborne Computers many years ago, when a "coming new product" announcement all but killed their sales of the current model, and ate their cash flow.

Not to mention the cost of the Cray that'll be needed to program the next one :D....

Definitely no "new product of the month club" here, although some additional firmware updates might be nice. I'd like to see a way to make the backlight timer adjustable when set for "on when squelch breaks", for example, and I'm sure some of the more experienced guys have even better ideas.

(I also hate the belt clip, but that's a whole 'nother story.)

Can't avoid progress or new models, but every once in a while you find out why something really was on sale :D....

(Radio Shack, btw, is really great at that. Sometimes they're all but giving something away. Then you find out that there's a new model that's worth the "older" price, or they've dropped the thing entirely to get in a new line of cellphones :D.)
