When is RS going to post their lineup of upgradable radios?

GRE and RadioShack are well aware of the rebanding. I have not heard anything for their models other than the Pro-96 and Pro-2096 Uniden has already posted their lineup of upgradable scanners. Does GRE and RadioShack know what to do yet?

Since the firmware in their radios is not upgradable, my guess is that it'll come down to whatever radios have a similar table setup to the Pro96. From what I've heard, that would be none...

Except the PRO-2096.

For the 96/2096, no upgrade is required.

I kinda doubt we will see any upgrades from RS/GRE. I think they got turned off by all the abuse of the PRO-96 upgrade offer. Specifically, people getting it who will never use it.

Really, what is going to be useful on the systems? Many will likely convert to P25 who aren't already using it. That leaves the PRO-96 (which works as-is with tables), the PRO-96 (which works as-is with tables), and the PRO-96 (which works as-is with tables).

It may well be that no upgrades are required, and anything that doesn't do digital, you are SOL already.

No, they will change to P25 when they move to the new frequencies. They won't be paying for it anyway - NexTel will.

Maybe, but until the new bandplan is finalized, there isn't much that can be done about it at this time. There is the proposed new bandplan, but that isn't final yet.

I'm sure the last thing they want to do is develop new firmware with a plan that won't be the final one.

After the first systems move, they should be able to come up with a plan of 'attack'.

I seriously doubt Nextel will be paying for any non-like-kind transactions of any sort -- unless it somehow saves them money to do so. Perhaps they might be convinced to pay a portion. That's likely going to be up to individual agency negotiating skill.

It may not be up to NexTel. If the FCC designates the band narrowband only, the PS agencies won't be able to use the existing NBFM equipment there. They will have to go to narrowband equipment.

I'm sure Motorola will push for P25 only equipment, as they make much more on that. Remember, much of the NBFM equipment is deemed 'not upgradable' (translation: Motorola wants to sell more new equipment).

It's also not up to NexTel to pick and choose what they want to pay for. Part of the deal is that they DO pay to move the PS agencies out of the 866-869 MHz range into the 851-854 MHz range.

This compost heap is starting to smell more everyday.

Nextel will not pay for upgrade to digital. Nextel has been accumulating used 800 equipment to be replacement equipment, but they don't have enough, so motorola is coming out with the cheap line.

But most of NexTel's warehoused equipment is not upgradable. That is, unless they make a deal with Motorola - not far out of the question. It will be interesting if that happens. No, YOUR Maxtrac can't be upgraded, but here is an upgraded Maxtrac to replace it. :roll:

Starting in a year, but in 4 years or so anything on 866-869 that moves to 851-854 MHz will likely not be trackable.
