While I started listening to PD, I quickly got bored. There were brief periods of excitement but most of the time it was just unit xxxx at this address with a <description of the vehicle>. Yawn!!! I then started using the scanning function of my scanner to find other things to listen to. I quickly discovered something totally unexpected, a local golf course! The talk between the staff was loads of fun. They'd talk about stuff that most of the MTV "reality" shows only wish they'd scripted. Apparently none of them understood that folks besides the two that were the main part of the conversation could hear them.
Haha, I admit the colorful banter on some construction/landscape/trucking business frequencies is top notch. I remember hearing a snow plow driver getting reamed by his supervisor on the air years ago. I felt bad for the guy but..lol

Nothing really tops the real time information you get from listening to the police and fire though, especially in your own town.

Yup--great way to stay informed about ones own town. When I started doing that I was initially surprised how much news went unreported by our news services! (I guess a shooting at a gas station out here in the 'burbs is not as glamorous as talking for twenty minutes about a gang war downtown.)

Reminds me of when I heard two truck drivers talking about the interesting view they get of attractive women in convertibles...I wonder if they realized scanner listeners were monitoring...

Haha, reminds me of a funny story when I was a newspaper photog, reporter and then editor at a seven-day-a-week daily. There had been a car stop with multiple shots being fired at the car as reported by many witnesses and our own photographs of the bullet-ridden car. We were getting close to press time so I called the police again and said are you sure you have no information so they faxed me a brief statement that said no shots were fired during the incident. I called him back and said are you sure you want to go with this or would you like me to hold the presses for about 15 minutes? We have multiple witnesses on the record and photos of the bullet holes and the shot out windows. He said hold on, hold on, I'll send you another release. LOL.

I always remember truckers talking on the CB about the views they were getting from some women driving convertibles hahaha.

There is no way to make up for the loss of local situational awareness due to encryption and law enforcement always has the same exact reason, at least in my area. It is sad. There is no way to stop it, just enjoy all the other things that you can still listen to.

I can monitor highway patrol but they speak in their own language and I honestly can't tell what the heck they are talking about most of the time :)

Check the Wiki for your area, a lot of the jargon might be explained. If not, post a question in the forum for your geographic area, someone will point you to info.

If stories like this would be collected into one spot we'd have out own version of "Funniest Home Videos"! :)

I think that's right oh, I'm an old-timer, a real reporter, not just some political activist or campaign worker.

By always shadowing the police, we kept them as honest as possible oh, they would never think of not being transparent with the media. In 2000 my city of Trenton New Jersey adopted a new digital system that we could not pick up on scanners. The mayor insisted that the police chief give my newspaper two Police radios from Motorola. Can you imagine?

At the end of the night when the paper was put to bed we would all go down together to the corner inn, the local cop bar. My how things have changed. Not for the better. ;)

Fire/EMS dispatch is good for general situational awareness, albeit delayed more than police dispatch in some cases. Bus drivers are good for inclement weather driving conditions and rush hour traffic updates. Ham chitchat can be interesting if it doesn't devolve into comparative discussions of hemorrhoid surgeries and suchlike. NWS channels are good to check occasionally, but are repetitive.

For us here in SK, ALL PD has been E for a few years, now, but there is EMS, FD, Transportation, rail, along with DMR, NXDN. Recent traffic on a local NXDN system has real time updates on Covid 19 vaccines and testing.

One of the things that I liked to listen to was a local dumpster company that was using DMR. I found it right after I got my SDS200. The dispatcher said stuff that would sometimes make me laugh, and sometimes, well, most of the time, made me cringe. It was "I can't believe he just said that!". He insulted every racial, religious, sexual preference, etc. He was a daily source of amusement, and then one day, poof, they were gone. I don't know what happened to them, but nobody is able to get them anymore. There is another dumpster company I can hear, but those calls rarely Get more exciting than, "Drop of a 19 to 1234 Main St....ZZZZZZZZZZZ.
