• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've been casually looking for a mobile cb for the car. I do not want to mount it permanently as I have enough radio's already mounted. I want one that comes in a carry case that I can stick in the trunk and pull out when I take trips. Any ideas!?!?!?

Yeah but I saw someone makes an "emergency" one that comes in a hard plastic case. I want to say uniden but it's like 70-80 dollars. I wanna go cheap. Lookin to see if there are any other types?

Several models used to be on the market. None with very good range. I saw a used one at a flea market today. Also saw several small 40 ch mobles for 5 to 10 dollars. Many years ago before cell phones I did what davidgcet suggested. I bought a very small moble added a cig lighter plug and mag antenna and gave it to my mom and dad to take on trips. The best thing is they gave it back when they got a cell phone. Find a small case of sorts to store it. This will be your best bet.

Are you talking about the raido Boxes that come with Mobile CBs in them that are promoted toward truckers that are in and out of different company trucks everyday?

Most of the emergency type CBs have antenna that have telescopic antennas that are not suitable for use while driving. They are also very difficult to use as in there is not microphone, you have to pick up the entire thing and hold it to your face. They also do not have good speakers. I would certainly avoid these items.

Like was said, a cheap CB can be had from garage sales for under $1. If you were closer to me, I would GIVE you 4 or 5 CBs. I have boxes full of them. Dunno if they work, but I use them as rifle targets. I have accumulated many over the years.

Couple that with a cheap magmount antenna from RadioShack, and you would be set for under $20. Toss it in a tupperware container in the trunk and you are ready to go. And it would preform a lot better than the emergency setups.,

A brand new Uniden 1001 from Radio Shack goes for $30. You can get an antenna for $20. $50 and brand new equipment. Cheaper than the "travel emergency" radios.

I had a Radio Shack emergency radio @ one time with the telescope antenna. Worked mediocre @ best. I agree that getting a mobile cb and using a cigarette lighter plug and mag mount antenna is ideal.
