ummm .. you do not "apply" per se .. usually VE's will be at a hamfest so all ya have to do is show up there, else contact the ARRL for locations.

You will need to have your drivers license too.

Many local ham clubs offer monthly testing. I know tests are available monthly in Louisville, KY and here in Lexington, KY. I am a VE (Volunteer Examiner) here in Lexington. We give tests every month at the Red Cross on the Second Saturday or Sunday of the month. Most populated areas will have tests readily available if you can't get to a major hamfest, where they are often given. Check out the W5YI site and the ARRL site for more info of specific locations and schedules. Depending on the Volunteer group, the price will range from $10 to $15. Here in our area I believe W5YI VEC tests are $12, ARRL VEC are $15 and WCARS VEC are $10.

A good place to find out about testing sessions in your area is to contact a nearby club. Many Ham radio clubs are affiliated with the ARRL and can be found by doing a searcch at the ARRL website. I've had my Ham license since 1995 and my girlfriend just got her license this week.

The "Now You're Talking" guide is my favorite and is the book they teach the local classes by. check for it in your local bookstores or order it directly from the ARRL.
