I'll either be dead or the nurses at the home will have to operate my scanner for me. :) My guess is that there will be no scanners as we understand them today. Getting a professional radio will not be an answer since their sale will be tightly controlled and you'll need a system key and radio ID number to even listen - GPS will see to that. Some agencies will allow some internet feeds of non-sensitive channels and we will pay for those the same way as we pay for scanners now. There will be be community-wide Wi-Fi and we will be listening to what ever the state makes available on our Pocket PC's...or whatever they're called by then. But, I suppose the local plumber or somebody might still be digital but non-encrypted. :)

30 years ago - that's 1977 - there were no LCD displays on scanners! It was more like 8 individual red LEDS that illuminated sequentially. I know, I was there. :D
Okay, I was there too. :D

LCD maybe not (there were pretty expensive in the mid-70's and generally not on consumer electronics), how about LED Displays (not lights, but displays) like for example the 1976 vintage Bearcat BC250 (Electra) 50 channel programmable scanner.

BTW, I have been monitoring PS since before there were scanners; you know, when you reached down and changed the channel yourself. ;)

Down the tubes. At the rate we're going, it seems like even in 8-10 years we'll have a lot more encryption. It sucks. Every time a radio system is upgraded, whether it be P25, rebanding, or whatever, there is another opportunity for the radio salesperson to make another sales pitch for encryption. Radio upgrades = encryption sales leads.:(

My fear is that eventually it'll be like Europe where lots of stuff is TETRA. Eventually I think we'll all have to settle for other areas within the radio hobby. At least there's always, Ham, CB, & SWL'ing.

I believe that as time goes on, most law enforcement radio comms will be encrypted. Whether it be in the name of $$$$ or "fighting terrorism".

My one hope is that agencies will continue to simulcast the main dispatch channels for Fire/EMS on available scanner freqs. As long as I can monitor fire/rescue dispatch, I'm happy.

very little voice communications. a lot of blackberry or what comes after it will handle dispatch and most other functions. car chases i guess will be voice, encrpted voice.

15-20 years dispatching will probably be all non-voice. A dispatcher will send the contents of a call to the patrol units in-car computer and text-to-speech software can read the contents to the unit while programming their GPS with the address/location and guiding them to their destination. Either that or the spectrum will be used for a large scale WiFi network (Google anyone?) for public safety and communication is done with encrypted voice-over-IP.

This digital stuff is really crazy...now they want 4 conversations on one freq!!?! When I hear the term "narrow bandwidth" it sends chills down my spine like the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. I cannot believe people are willing push the "cellular voice quality" and put up with it. There must be some really good salesmen out there!! I'm also amazed at how we're running out of frequencies yet I scan through many VHF and UHF ranges and hear nothing but dead air.

I see it still being around in 15-20 years. Might be a lot more encryption but it will still be around. As far as the new types of systems I don't really see them being extremely widespread. Virginia is just now implenmenting the STARS system and think of how many years the current system had been used. If money wasn't a factor then yeah everyone would switch to the latest and greatest right away.

Even if law enforcement is universally encrypted, I expect we'll still be able to listen to aircraft, marine, and trains. The crystal ball is a bit hazy on what's going to happen with business band stuff. I'm especially curious as to where low band will be.
