Need a true outdoor and modern version of the Yaesu VX-6R (VX-7R) packaged with FT5D style features (dual receive, APRS, 16 character channel names, etc) with support for screw down threaded and sealed speaker mic. The VX6 is I think an 18 year old design at this point. What's a good option today for a rugged HAM radio?

The VX-6 does not have all the features of the FT5 like built in GPS, dual band, APRS, and C4FM. That said I've had one for years and it has done very well for me. It also has 1.25 meters on reduced power. I think VX-6 is still around because, like the FT-60, it has a niche which is not filled by any of Yaesu other products.

The FT5 has the same water resistance spec as the VX-6. It does mot have the screw in mic connection. However, having left one outside in the rain accidentally for several days, its water resistance is excellent. It meets the IPX7 standard.

The VX-6 is more rugged. But, unless you want to pound in tent stakes, that is probably of little value. Yaesu clearly doesn't see this a major selling point.

The FT5 is a more modern radio. It is also a couple of hundred dollars more. It has a bigger battery although with GPS and APRS going this may not translate into longer life.

If the extra features are important then get the FT5. If not the VX-6 is still an excellent radio.
