Anyone happen to know where that transmitter is located? Even approximately? Should be south of Portland somewhere. I’m getting back into Airband scanning, and I‘m finding I can receive most of the ATC transmitters around the Portland area from my home in SW Portland, but not 118.1. Years ago when I lived in NE Portland, I consistently received the PDX ground station on that frequency with a very good signal, but they must have moved the transmitter since then. I receive all the towers in the Portland area, all the ATIS, Seattle Center on 121.35 comes booming in, but not Portland Approach on 118.1. And that‘s surprising to me as I live on a bit of a hill and have a pretty good view to the south, which is the direction that frequency covers. I’m considering getting an airband Yagi for it, but it’d be nice to know where I should aim it. If it’s behind Mt. Scott or something I might just be out of luck!
Thanks for the help!

Well, nevermind. This evening 118.1 PDX Approach is just booming in. Very strange. For the last two weeks I’ve only heard airborne aircraft on that frequency, now I‘m hearing both sides perfectly. Hopefully it stays that way. I didn’t really want to mess with a Yagi anyway:).

Well, tonight it’s back to no reception of any ground station on 118.1. Guess I’ll have to pony up for a Yagi after all .

Look at the PDX sectional map. 118.1 is APPR CON for only a/c arriving/departing SW direction. NE is 124.35.

In both cases, it's only out to 20nm.

Yes, that’s why it’s so puzzling. I’m 9 miles SW of the airport, right in the middle of the control area, yet have no reception of the ground station. That‘s why I’m curious about its location. I do have decent reception of PDX NE approach on 124.35.

I didn’t know about that transmitter. That might be for the NE Approach Control on 124.35, which I do get some reception of. I’m a bit surprised it’s located there, you’d think they could have used the Seattle Center transmitter tower called ‘Scappoose‘, which is just a few miles to the north of that Burlington transmitter.

They may have more than one transmitter site for that frequency that the controller can select as needed. On my travels up I-5 I've noticed that frequency booming in from Woodburn to at least Wilsonville and suspect they have a transmitter maybe at Aurora airport or on a hill somewhere in that area.

Usually Alt sites would be listed in the NTIA DB and this is the only one

That is the only one from the NTIA for 118.1000 in Oregon
