Is there a website or other resource that gives a comprehensive list of fire stations, engine numbers, and EMS squads for New Jersey counties? This newbie would like to better understand who is being called out when I hear a dispatch on my new scanner.

Thanks ahead!

It should all be in the RR DB under each individual county in the "Codes and Maps" section.

That Philadelphia Scanner guide I mentioned has all the info your looking for. You can also just go on the fire companies web sites, some have a list of all the counties stations. After looking at a few web sites you can usually figure out the officer/apparatus identifiers too.

Does the guide also list comm freqs for area hospitals?

Which leads me to another question...

I would assume that ambulances communicate with hospitals en route by radio with patient status and such. I loaded all of the freqs for Underwood Memorial Hospital into my scanner, and listened all day without any communication - even though some ambulances clearly stated to dispatch they were heading to Underwood.

How does that work? I think it would be interesting to hear some info from the ambulance once they got onsite and began treatment and transporting.

Thanks for helping me out...

Patient status from ambulance to the hospital would either be sent on JEMS 2 (155.3400 MHz S (CSQ)) or via cell phone.

I'm a total newbie. Can you explain the JEMS 2 thing and can this be received via my scanner? Also, is this a standard frequency regardless of hospital?

...so much to learn

Gloucester County uses 508.5875R PL167.9 CH18 EMS To Hospital, and I think Camden Co. uses the VHF JEMS Channels. I'm not sure of the freqs you programed but there probally for Hospital Security, facilities, ER/OR etc. and are probally low power.

Around me all the amb to hosp transmissions are simplex so that would make it harder for you to hear them depending on you antenna and their distance from you...

JEMS 2 (155.3400 MHz) is the channel that an ambulance calls the hospital on to tell them that they are transporting a patient to their ER. Sometimes you will hear descriptions of what happened and maybe sometimes there will be a doctor authorizing an EMT to help give a nitroglycerine pill, etc. This is more for BLS ambulances (EMT-Basics) than paramedics. Most paramedic units (MICU) have thier own means of communicating with their medical control physicians, but most MICU vehicles also have JEMS 2 as a backup.

Yes, you can hear it on your scanner IF it is used in your area. As blah says, this is a simplex system. There is no repeater, so you have to be in range to hear the traffic. You may only hear one side (usually only the hospital) or you may be too far and not hear anything. The ambulance may use a TouchTone (tm) signal, a tone squelch or maybe even a digital dial to make the hospital radio beep for attention.

Good monitoring to you!
