I am just trying to make some simple beacons (below 2GHz range, maybe 455 or 900mhz) and I'm trying to find some inexpensive transistors to experiment with. All I can find online are surface mount parts or ridiculously expensive strange shaped parts.
Is the 2n2218 the "general purpose" rf transistor? Online I can't seem to find it in a plastic package, always in the metal can which makes me think they are old or used. Is this an obsolete part? If so whats its replacement
