I have both and they both suck...lol Im using LMR-400 with the discone and 75 ohm RG-6U cable for the scantenna. I've heard people rant and rave about both of them but its not doing much justice for me. Must be my location....

I speak mainly out of frustration. I chose both of them hoping they would draw in more of a signal for me. So far it hasnt worked.

I have heard a lot of good feedback for both of those antenna's. I would go with the Scantenna if you are more interested in a low band signal and go with the Diamond Discone if you are more interested in a VHF signal. I've found my Scantenna to be better on low band then the discone and the discone to be better on VHF then the Scantenna.

I ran a Diamond discone back in Ohio, 40' tower, now I was having trouble getting mobiles units and handhelds, I picked up a RS. adjustable 20db pre-amp with FM trap.
installed it and it was like these units were in my driveway. There many pre amps you can get, the better ones mount up at the antenna. I just didn't want to take my tower down so I did it the easier way.
Over all the discone was good by itself, with the pre-amp made it even better.
It might will help in your location.

It depends greatly on what frequencies you intend to monitor.
