I am about to purchase a scanner and want to get all the FIRE/EMS and police for Ventura and the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County. I was wondering if any of the trunked systems were digital. Also, can the digital scanners scan both digital and non-dig trunked systems at the same time Thank you!

there is a digital trunking system (ICIS) in burbank that serves many LA COunty departments. There is no digital trunking in Ventura county only Simi Valley which uses digital conventional.
The LAPD is digital conventional. Your best bet would be to get the digital scanner like the Uniden BCD 396T. I liked mine very much. Yes they can scan digital and analog frequencies and systems at the same time. Some of the trunking systems are mixed mode (digital/analog)
The database here has all the info for the systems and frequencies.

correction Simi PD

Correction: Simi Valley Police IS digital conventional on UHF, but maintains a repeater on 160.785 for mutual aid purposes. To my knowledge, all other agencies in Ventura County are conventional.

Thanks, I am wondering if I should then just start out and be good with a PRO 97? And when I do go digital, I am back and forth on the 396 vs the Pro-96.. I don't really care about the size diff.

If you have the money I would get the 396 right off the bat. It does so much. I also used to listen to federal freqs both analog and digital in the SFV. ICIS is good listening too.
Good luck

I'm not sure of the 396 but the word is that the PRO-96 will not survive re banding, and it cannot be modified to cover the new 700 MHz public safety band. The PSR-500, by GRE, will do all of the above. With narrow banding happening at the federal level and many state and local agencies replacing equipment with narrow band capable equipment to meet the 2013 deadline, it would be best to invest in a radio that will meet the changes coming down the pike.

This is an expired license for the sanitation department and was licensed for conventional use, not trunked. There are some trunked systems in Ventura County but off the top of my head they are all LTR systems used by commercial entities like Swinks Towing out of Simi Valley.

Your master site
... the word is that the PRO-96 will not survive re banding
Old word. You can do rebanded systems with the PRO-96 or 2096. See the Sticky in the RadioShack forum. The only difference when it comes to rebanding between the 96 and GRE 500 is the 500 has more tables and can support operation on newly rebanded channels and existing 866-869 channels (not typical). But that's another topic.
