LTR removes the 96 from consideration.

Otherwise both are great radios.

Or... Get a Pro-96 for most things and pick up a Pro-92 (or 2057) for LTR. I just checked on ebay and there are several auctions of Pro-92's for less than $70. :D

There's over 57,500 posts on these forums last I checked, I'm willing to bet that about a fourth of those are discussions about which radio is better. Your best bet is to read and research the archives and what's been discussed over and over again about this subject.... unless you have more specific questions.

Hi im just new to this. I just bought a pro 96, and i think it is a great radio. Of course it dont do provoice. But im sure in the future Uniden will devlope a provoice scanner, hopefully a mobile, base then ill have one of each. And hopefully radio shack will have a download for the pro 96 that you can purchase. Then i would have the best of both worlds. But for the time being im very happy with the purchase of my pro 96.

Uniden has stated that MA/COM won't let scanner manufacturers license the ProVoice specs. No license = no scanner.

Yeah, you are right. Out of 32452 registered users, 48 think the radio shack scanners are better (from the most recent poll). If people want to have these dumbass voluntary small-sample non-scientific polls, more power to them, but making conclusions from them is idiotic.

P.S. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention on my earlier post! Most of the discussions about which radio is better usually end up in unproductive fuzzing, fighting and arguing!

Neither one is particularly hard to program, just different. But if I had to, I would pick the PRO-96 as slightly easier to program. It's all a matter of remembering keystroke sequences.

The PRO-96 should cost just slightly less than the Uniden model.

You'll pay more for the pro-96 in the end once you buy the AC adpater (if you want it) and the PC programing cable. Both scanners retail for $499.99. The Uniden's come with the AC adapter and the PC cable. With software they are both just as easy to program as the other.

If your main interest in buying the pro-96 is that you are going to monitor alot of digital, go with the pro-96. The audio cannot be beat by any other scanner. This coming from a guy who once swore there was no difference between the two

In short, do the comparison yourself. The info is out there, just do some simple searching. Look at each scanners features and find the one that best suites your needs.

Don't forget that there is a $50 off coupon on the PRO-96 right now. Even with the cable and AC adapter, you come out cheaper. Although you are far better off getting rechargable NiMH cells and a suitable charger to charge them externally. Personally, I had the cells and charger before the scanner for several other items, so it was a non-issue to me. All I got was the unit and PC cable. I later bought Win96. You really can't add that to the cost since decent SW costs about the same for either unit. (The SW that comes with the Uniden is crap from what people who have it say)

As for which is better, it all depends on what you want to do. If you want LTR, the Uniden is the way to go. If you want to use the scanner while travelling, you can't beat the V-folders and automatic audio setttings. There are many other key issues with each, but it just goes to show that NEITHER is head and shoulders above the other.

Now let's be FAIR. Out of those same 32452 users, only 28 bothered to vote for the Uniden. Of course, this ASSumes that all 32452 read the forums (a very bad ASSumption).

If only 83 people cared enough to vote, it does count for something.
(the extra 7 people had no preference)

I know that only 28 people voted for uniden. What I'm saying is 83 total votes doesn't mean ****, when compared to the total number of scanner owners.

As far as "proving" people like one scanner type over the other, such a small sample doesn't. What if the 32000+ members that didn't vote all prefer uniden? Can you prove that they don't? What about the scanner owners worldwide that aren't even members of this forum?

All you can prove is that a majority of the people who voted in that particular poll prefer radio shack. You think that means something. I don't. Why do you think TV stations and such always have "non-scientific" disclaimers for polls that are voluntary rather than randomly selected? Voluntary polls are always skewed toward those with the strongest opinions. This is not necessarily the same as the majority opinion.

Even if all of the 32452 people don't read the forums, one can assume most of them represent different people, a percentage of which own scanners. Whether they read the forum or not, whether they vote in polls or not, they may have opinions as to which brand is better, and the total results may or may not agree with the poll.
