I am a lineman for the county.
I know that when i listen to WX channel 6 has more static on the 536 and sounds better on the 996, would that indicate which one is stronger

It would indicate that one is doing a better job pulling the signal out of the noise than the other. That could be that the 996 is more sensitive, or it's just doing a better job dealing with other strong nearby signals.

There can be a lot of variables in the radios. Even identical radios will have different performance. Component tolerances are a thing, and that varies from radio to radio and will make each one act differently. Best you can do is test each radio with the same antenna and see which one works better in each situation.

Would you go with the 996

I would use whatever I had at hand. I'd focus more on the antenna. If you have a poor antenna, performance is going to be poor no matter what type of radio you have. On the other hand, a really good antenna can make even a poor scanner perform better.
I think this was what I getting at, which would be more sensitive but I was thinking the 996 was more sensitive but I wanted to confirm what I hearing

I guess you're not paying attention or you have issues with comprehension. Read the previous posts and stop asking all these silly questions.

The antenna I have has 5-7 dbi and is 30 feet high

That's a pretty decent setup. If you have good coaxial cable of a reasonable length, then you should be doing just about all you can do with a consumer scanner.

Enjoy what you have, there isn't much more you can do to squeeze more performance out of what you have.

Are you hearing what you desire to hear? You have the scanners you're asking questions about, and as we've said numerous times, you know better than we do. No joking, just repetitive questions on the same subject which you've received repetitive answers to. Is it working, are you hearing something, if you want to do better keep jacking the antenna up higher or upgrade the scanners, simple as that.

I try to stay impartial, but you keep wanting people to tell you which scanner should sound better for you. As I told you pages ago, stop focusing on the specs. Whichever one sounds better to YOU is all that matters. Sit back, listen and have some fun.

Sounds like everything is working as it should. I know you had some challenges early on with this installation, but it sounds like you got them all worked out. You have a decent antenna setup and two respectable scanners. There isn't much more you can do to improve things. Your reception can be impacted by a lot of things well outside your control. So, enjoy what you have.

For the scanner that's not connected to the outside antenna should I get a 800mhz antenna for indoors

If you only want to listen to 800MHz and the signal is strong enough to work indoors.

Outdoor antennas are usually a better choice. Indoor antenna will suffer from attenuation and local noise.
The tower is 3.45 miles away the antenna that came with it the signal is good and then it drops out, would a 800 antenna with gain help
