Forgive me if this is a basic question, I'm new to this site and still pretty new to scanning.

I know there are several different options for programming software like Win500, ARC500 and PSRedit500, but IIRC all of them are like $35 to register. I'm willing to spend that money on whichever software is best and ideally easy to use. I figured I'd ask you guys since I'd like to avoid paying $35 twice. Thanks in advance.

You can pretty much rule out WIN500 as the author has gone missing a couple years ago and a number of people have reported issues getting activation keys. The free trial works still, but after that you are taking a chance.

OK, thanks for the heads up. Which of the other two would you recommend?

All three programs offer a 30 day free trial. So, download each one & see which you like best. Any of the three can program your scanner, and, since you are a Premium Subscriber, any of the three can import systems from the database here on RadioReference.

If you let us know your county and state and which systems and agencies you would like to monitor, I will check the database to see if your scanner is capable of receiving them. I have ARC500 and find it very fast and easy to use. ARC500 Basic is all you need to program your scanner. The Pro version provides additional logging functions.

Montgomery County, VA. Looking to monitor Police, Fire and EMS. From what it looks like I should be able to monitor everything on the list except the DMR frequencies. I don't know what the "type" column means, though.

The "Type" column is basically an indicator if the frequency listing is for a base station or a portable/mobile license or a repeater.
You can pretty much ignore that column for most purposes.
Hover your mouse pointer over the word "Type" and it should show you what the different letter codes mean.
The other column headings also give the info for the contents in that column when you hover over the column heading.

Thanks for the explanation.

Here is a Montgomery County ARC500 file for programming your scanner. Download and install ARC500 Basic for the free trial period. Once this file is in your scanner, you will be able to read the scanner and download it into Win500 and PSREdit500 and save the file. Then, you will have the file for whichever software you decide to use. You probably will need to install a driver for your cable. Connect your scanner to your computer. Save the attached zipped file to your computer and extract. Open the extracted file with ARC500. Go to the Scanner tab and Upload to Scanner. Scan lists as follows:

Scan Lists:
1. Mont Co Fire/EMS
2. Mont Co EMS/Hosp
3. Mont Co Law
4. VA Tech/Schools
5. VA State Police

Thank you for this! I will do that once my scanner gets here.
