Hello

I apologize for creating a "which one should I buy" thread, as I am sure they get very old here. I am looking for a basic handheld scanner that can be purchased at a local radio shack for around $100. I read the new user wiki but still seem a little confused as to whether or not a basic non trunking scanner will fit my needs.

I would like to pick up a few local police and sheriff's department radio signals.

Well you are not going to be happy you will spend 3 times that. The Plainfield Police will require a
PRO-197 on sale 299.99
PRO-106 on sale 299.99
PRO-18 reg price 499.99
The DuPage SO will not work on the 100.00 scanner
If you drop the Plainfield Police you can get by with.
PRO-107 on sale 129.99
PRO-163 reg price 199.99
PRO-164 reg price 199.99

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

My suggestion would be to buy the more expensive scanner should your area decide to go trunked or digital. In my case, all the frequencies I monitor are analog and I could have got a $100 scanner, but I bought a more expensive scanner to be prepared since Alberta is going digital in a few years.

Thanks for the replies. The UHP / SLC was one I listen to on my iPhone app regularly but only after posting here I realized that I won't be able to pick it up halfway across the country!

Will I need a trunking scanner to pick up DuPage Sheriff's Office and College of DuPage PD? I think the $100 scanners are non trunking.

My two local departments, where I live and where I work are both encrypted or inaccessible.

Which one of the following will be the best option? What features do the more expensive scanners below have that the others do not?

GRE PSR-310
PRO-107
PRO-164

Thanks!

A basic analog trunking scanner will work with the PL/DPL's on the conventional frequencies you want to monitor. It will, also, give you the opourtunity to monitor state and local trunking frequencies. If, you can find the 164 on sale, it will work nicely. I would stay away from the newer Pro-107 and Pro-18. As easy as they seem to be to program, it is not as easy to make the scanlists. The 163/164 use banks and an easier user interface to program by hand. They make a good beginner scanner. Asking in the Utah state forum further down the forums page might get you better info:)
HTH,
Larry
