Thanks guys for the great info and help. If I can not locate a good 780XLT what do you think about the 785D or the new 898T unit. Thanks

The BC-785D is the exact same scanner as the BC-780xlt only it has the option to add on a digital card to pick up digital transmissions from APCO25 systems. Its not a required option to have. So if you're only interested in mil-air, civilian-air, and ham bands, the 785 will be just as good.

I have not heard any one say how good the 898T is. I do know that most people who listen to mil-air use the 780. check out http://www.milaircomms.com

look at his equipment:

He's using NINE BC-780's for mil-air monitoring.

aha, my appologies...how do I see what was edited?

Can't say that I've ever shared peoples enthusiasm for the 780 on milair (I have two bought originally for their trunking ability but used only for monitoring spot frequencies now). Also Unidens are generally too America-centric for my taste (I do understand the commercial reasons for this!). I find my 2042 and Optocom both perform much better than the 780 but both lag behind my AOR and Icom radios.

Scroll up to the very first message on page one. You'll see at the bottom of his post it says he edited it. and it gives a date/time stamp. Well I don't know where you're at, but in the USA the 780 has one of the hottest receivers for 225-400mhz AM mode. Just look at http://www.milaircomms.com to see his station.

Nexus, I like monitoring the Milair frequency because I am only four miles from the Airforce base and the F-16's and C-130 & 135's fly over my house alot every day.

Get the biggest baddest radio you can afford and get it over with. You won't be happy with cheaper ones and will face wanting to upgrade yet again later. And you won't recoup your money on selling the lesser rig.

So get out the plastic and start looking for a sale or deal or something. Don't be afraid of ebay. Just buy from a reputable seller who will guarantee the sales terms.

good luck

Icom 8500

The Iciom 8500 is a great choice for a receiver...
If you need to go cheaper look for an R-1500 or a used PCR-1000.
And I always like to have at least 1 Uniden Trunk Tracker around.
The 780 is a great receiver to start with.
