Hello and thank you for taking a moment to read my post. I am a widow on a fixed-income, I live in Hernando county, FL, and work in Hillsborough county full-time and have been looking for a while to purchase a scanner that I can use primarily to monitor public safety in case of emergencies. As I drive 100+ miles every weekday, it would be helpful to have something portable if possible.

I've been reading the area-specific posts and see that a lot of agencies are changing systems; I don't have a lot of money to invest in more than one scanner, so would ask your advice as to what would be the best one for me to purchase? I have consulted the downloadable listings of frequencies for both counties that I spend a lot of time in, but am not exactly sure what it is I will be needing.

Please forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place, or if I've asked a stupid question; I've tried to read all the FAQs and they said to post area-specific questions here.....thank you for your help.

I would recommend a Radio Shack Pro 106 or GRE 500 (unless Hillsborough goes to X2 TDMA) One scanner is all you will need. You could program each County in a different scan bank.

I would also recommend digital models because Hillsborough County has a digital system in the works, but who knows when it will be online. TIAPD is also digital along with Temple Terrace.

If you think you might prefer Uniden Models, the BCD396XT is the latest version. If you can find one on eBay, you can get the previous model, the BCD396T for much cheaper.
