Either one will work well for you. You might check the 296 - 96 comparison thread on the Scanning forum to get a better sense of the contrasts & similarities of those units. Price is roughly the same.

You might want to wait for the new Uniden BCD396T. It's due out late summer 2005.

DO a google search on the BCD396T to get more info.

this information would be greatly appreciated.

I have several BC250D's and one BC296D. I had a Pro-96 however did not like it. The BC296D does great for me - but both the Pro-96 and the BC296D are great scanners.

I'm interested in getting started scanning, I live in Philadelphia, want to hear police, fire, everything basically.

The BCD396T is out now. Is that one much better than the 296D or the Pro-96? I need something easy, and they are all in the same price range it seems. I live in Northeast Philadelphia, and want one which will get the best coverage I guess.

Suggestions?

ItzDan, I would go with the Pro-96 they are easy to program by hand and I think they are easier to use than the unidens, thats just my opinion, also I would hold off on the bcd396t because they are still working all of the bugs out. I have a Pro-96 and it works great for Philly.

hope this helps.

The Pro-96/2096 will scan both Philadelphia and Bucks County in Control Channel only Mode, requiring only one bank for each system. The 296/796 will not, thus Bucks County may need several banks using the 296 and Philadelphia may need two banks.

How the 396 handles CC only in multi site smartzone systems has not been answered to me in another feed comparing it to the 96. But clearly, the 296 will not do as well as the 96.

For multi site smartzones (like MontCo) you need to program each zone into a spearate system on the 396T. The reason is it will lock on the first CC it hears. So in the case of MontCo or Phila 800 systems, you must program each zone. Using the UASD software from Uniden (free) kits easy to create a copy of each zone's talk groups.
