Im in the market for a new scanner. i dont know what to get at this point. I currently have a BC72XLT its analog obviously. I like the BC72XLT because its portable so can take it in the car, durable, and gets pretty good range no matter where i am.

I dont know if i want another hand held, a unit installed in the car, or a unit that will sit on my desk.

If anyone can tell me the advantages of one over another, or what might be better for my needs. what are good and what are not good makes.

I have a hand held that i can use in my home, or in my car. i dont know if i want something to stay in my car or to stay in my home or to get a new hand held.

some one help me make up my mind. :p

thanks in advance

Depends on where you do most of your listening and what you listen too.
Base/mobile can be mounted in car or used in the home but not carried around.
Handheld can be carried around and can be used as a base when not mobile.
Just make up a Pro/Con list for each based on your needs.

Glenn pretty well summed it up. If you travel there are other considerations like being able to conceal it and take it in and out as you go. I have both but I'm still a portable fan over all. The biggest drawback is messing with batteries. Ive got a mobile and when your out and about, without a portable and there is something interesting going on, your buts going to sit in the car till its over. Been there done that.;)

well.....i like hand held, because i cant take it anywhere, and use it at home. i figure that i could have a base at home, and still use the same or a different hand held than i have already. but.....

is there any advantage to buying a base for home, or having a trunked unit in my car? as in, out of the 3 choices, is any of them able to receive transmissions better than the other?

What are your choices? What are trying to listen to?

Likely there's a lot more than that. I would go to the Eastern Canada forum and ask questions. The Ontario folks are a very active lot - there's even one or two Yahoo groups for that area.

This article in our wiki addresses some of the questions you should be asking, and I'm sure that once you're a bit more familiar with what's in your area, you'll have lots more (note that anything in blue or underlined - both here and in our wiki - is a link)
