Thinking about getting first SDRPlay product.
How does the RSP1B compare to the rspdx-r2 specifically on AM broadcast band? I know the rspdx-r2 has the HDR mode below 2 MHz. How much of a difference does the HDR mode make on AM broadcast? What does the HDR mode really do?

Thanks for any insight

I don't listen to the AM broadcast band but my RSPdx was a huge improvement over the first model. I like to listen to the LW beacons and the RSPdx hears them very well. The WWVB transmission (60 Khz) comes in very good also.

If you are really serious about digging out very weak signals on MW, the R2 is better. HDR mode improves the dynamic range so the weaker signals pop out of the noise a little better. For me, the RSP1B does well enough on MW and is a great all-around performer. Another reason to go for the R2 is if you want to run multiple antenna inputs.

You cant go wrong with any of the SDR play products. I have the RSP1a that i use as a pan adapter with a yaesu HF rig,
The rspdo that I keep in my portable gear and also the network SDR receiver they recently came out with . I have that one remotely setup and remote into it. Although i only use it for VHF/UHF, some day ill add HF to it.

Not tryiing to interefere with your question but you did not say if you have an HF+ Discovery. I have all these, and would find it superior for AM broadcast. I could not get into Airspy.us probably because it is on sell but one could order from Airspy HF+ Discovery

Negative - I own Airspy R2 and Mini used for trunking systems.
