• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Ok this could start a heated debate but the goal is to get a sampling of what everyone thinks is best for radio systems. The beauty of this is that you can vote without anyone knowing how you voted. ;) This poll is open to all meaning the casual scanner listerner to the edumacadted and the systems guys.

Yes "Best" is subjective. ;)

Yes, this stems from the GAO recent report.

It seems like you are asking for a multi-dimentional answer in a linear poll!
i.e
Trunked vs. Conventional
Band
Analog Modulation vs. Digital Modulation
Proprietary Vocoding/Channel coding vs. Open
If trunked:
Proprietary Control vs. Open

And we could add a few more dimentions if we try.

Maybe it should look something like this (just to be fair)

Motorola I
Motorola II
Other Motorola (digital)
LTR
Passport
Other LTR variants

Ge/Ericcson/MA-COM EDACS
EDACS Provoice

APCO-25 Conventional
APCO-25 Trunked
APCO-25 Secure

UHF - Trunked
Then a line for each type of trunking

VHF - Trunked
Then a line for each type of trunking

Conventional 40-160Mhz
Analog
Proprietary Digital
P-25

Conventional 400-900Mhz
Analog
Proprietary Digital
P-25

What's best for one user may not be best for another. It all depends on the needs of the user. Would you say a pickup truck is better than a sports car because you can haul stuff in it? It is, only if you have a need to haul stuff.

I'm here a lot
After I cast my vote, it was interesting to note that the choices with the
least programming steps to get operational seem to be popular.

Wonder why?

A pick up truck is great if you have to haul things.
If you haul things in an old pick up truck and it breaks down it's easy to fix.
If you haul things in one of the newer pick up trucks and it breaks, it costs a fortune to fix it and a computer to tell you what's wrong with it.
The old pick up can haul as much as the new pick up truck but much cheaper and less complicated.

Well there was no choice for what I wanted. Moto Smartzone analog. I hope the mot other (digital) included this system as well. Type II can be more then one thing.

EDACS Offers so much more to the user. with ProVoice Digitial and an encrypted Control channel. the Scanning public can stay locked out. add wide area coverage and the performance is so much better. of course compared to Motorola Systems it is a bit higher to operate in the cost sense.

of course 40-160 has alot of nice abilities too, but can be very handicapped by atmospheric conditions since it is a terrain following carrier.

I just think EDACS is dynomite!

Can you provide some details on how the wide area coverage or other performance is better?

Also I guess EDACS is okay if you only have 2048 possible TG's you want system wide.
