I'm studying to take my exam, so far it seems pretty straight forward (odd right?) I've had a few years of schooling in the electronics field so that is probably why. So I have been looking over the hamradiolicenseexam.com site and have been reading/studying for about 7 hours now, I've taken three practice tests at the tech level and passed all three, easily actually...

So my questions... Can I go in and take the tech exam and if I pass, then take the general exam?
How many of you have done this?

thanks

Yes, as long as the VE team is prepared to give the higher license tests, you should be able to take the General or even the Extra at the same time you take Technician test...assuming you pass the lower-level test first. There is no additional fee for taking a higher-level test as long as all tests are given at the same test session. Note, if you need to retake a test at the same session because you didn't pass the first time, many VE teams will charge you another test fee. This is allowed under the testing rules.

When I went for my General, I passed it fairly easily and one of the VEs asked if I wanted to take the Extra. At first I declined because I didn't think I was ready. After some thought, I decided to try it and passed.

warnberg,

Your years of schooling in the electronics field will definitely help with some of the test questions, but you will need to know a bit about the ham bands/SSB/CW and a little info. about antennas as some of those questions may appear on the test.

Trying to remember all the freq./numbers, etc. may be a bit tricky for some. I was lucky - both my Tech & General exams were pretty easy with not a lot of the frequencies questions...although I'm sure I wouldn't have had an issue with that as I studied up on those numbers quite a bit.

I took Tech & General in the same session. I wasn't ready for the Extra, so I decided not to take it at this time.
