Is there enough difference between the two? Besides the keyboard ? I have a 1088 and the keyboard is not very useful . Is it worth the $100 price difference??

No difference, other than the keyboard. They are the same basic radio

I have both and no difference except the keyboard. In simple times you
keyed in half a dozen local frequencies and you were in business. Things
seldom changed, but nowdays with a zillion channels, flashing lights and other
extras, you really do need a computer to keep it all organized.
If I need another, it will be without the keys.

Good luck

I like my 1095, have really enjoyed it. I am so used to not having a keypad with my 1080, I just went with the 1095. Basically the same radio except for the keypad difference. I would just go with the 1095, Ham Station looks to have a decent price, have not really researched prices lately though.

I went with the 1098 over the 1095 because it was the newer of the two. The keypad appears to be the only difference but worth it IMHO to enable/disable scan lists on the fly. Both are great radios. No apparent issues with the display and other issues the 436/536 crowd is dealing with.............

I'm really relieved to see Whistler moving forward. GRE's OOUI and methods of organization work so much better for me than Uniden's. I hope that Whistler continues to use and improve on that approach.

Price difference

My 1098 was only $19 different from the 1095 at ScannerMaster.

This is from Whistler for you 1098 want-to-buys:

Advantages of the 1098 are:

Easy to Use Keyboard – Backlit Alphanumeric keypad in addition to the familiar Scan, Pause, Select and Navigation controls make it easy for you to use your WS1088 and WS1098.
A raised homing bar, various button shapes, and keyboard illumination provide assistance for the visually impaired.
Object Oriented Menu Driven User Interface – Provides common data entry, browsing, and control methods for every scannable object with support for millions of stored objects, limited only by SD Card capacity
Easily Create New and Edit Existing Trunked Systems, Sites, and Talkgroups.
Easily and quickly turn scanlists on/off

Hard to do simple things

I'm used to Bearcats and being able to press "HOLD" or "MANUAL" to stop a scan, then further pressing to move from channel to channel and stop and lock on a particular one for further listening. I can't do that on the 1098 because there are no equivalent buttons. It takes MENU moves to do it and that's a real pain. There may be an easy way to do it that I haven't discovered yet, since I've only had mine for three weeks, and don't spend enough time with it.

If you would take the time to read the manual you would not make such erronous statements. Try reading page 13 of the manual. It does not require using the Menu button at all.

huh?

@W5YDM ... ► / ║ is play and pause.... just like a DVR or TIVO that stops it on an "object" or continue scanning. Hitting MENU while stopped on an object also opens up the editing.

AND to find objects in scan lists *like manually scrolling through old channels in banks for older scanners* you simply hit MENU/Browse objects, use toggle arrows to find which scan list you want to look though. Keeping scan lists short helps*

I prefer the keypad for better programming ability, so I'll probably opt for the 1098 to go with my 197's. I just hope it receives as well as the 197. 73, n9zas

Hit left arrow to go to last TG .. then up or down (or volume / squelch knob) to change TG.

Thanks, I found a way

Pressing the pause/sel button while the unit is scanning does absolutely nothing on my 1098, but if pressed when a station is transmitting, it will hold the object until pressed again. I was looking for a one-button pause and have since discovered the left arrow solution suggested in the last reply.

Exactly. With the firmware additions plus the keypad, it's the best choise of all the Wistler models. (With exception to a future P2 model).
