Why isn't the Whistler Forum open, the radio's have been released?

If you look at the forum description, the bold lettering pretty much explains it:

[NOTICE: this forum will redirect to the GRE forum until Whistler designs their own scanners.]

Got to wait for something from their own creation instead of rebadges.

Personally I think it should have a dedicated forum now that they've been released under the Whistler name. There will likely be firmware updates and such specific to the rebadges (or not, who knows).

It will likely be years before they release a product of their own design.

I'll second that. Whistler questions should be answered in the Whistler forum. As many here have noted, there is no more GRE. Additionally, any existing GRE issues are GRE issues not Whistler (and vice-versa of course)

What Whistler has released is really Radio Shack/GRE radios and those do not belong in the GRE Forum. As those of us who have been around awhile know the Radio Shack/GRE updates and vice versa were not compatible with each radio. So in reality it would make more sense to be redirected to the Radio Shack forum. But the simplicity of it all is put it in the Whistler forum.

It appears that the GRE support is now in the hands of Whistler.

Why not archive the GRE forum, change the title to Whistler/GRE and Radio Shack forums as needed. Just put a sticky and a link in each forum to the older GRE forum archives. GRE questions can be addressed in the new Whistler/GRE forum (and linked to older GRE information as warranted).

At the moment there will be no changes. Most of the forum traffic is for support of the scanners (i.e., how to program or operate) which mirrors the support of the Whistler scanners. The RadioShack forum has been kept around to support RS scanner pre-GRE. At some point it should be merged in to a combined RS/GRE forum.

It also says "For discussion of Whistler branded scanners"
Just like the GRE forum says "for the discussion of all GRE branded scanning radios"

Now we have Whistler branded scanners on the market. What would be the huge disadvantage of NOT opening that forum?

Same logic should apply to Radio Shack, they do not desingns their own scanners.

Except that RadioShack is a special case. RadioShack products are a mixture of both GRE and Uniden designs. Many of the models were designed exclusively for RadioShack which means that many of the models were never sold under the GRE or Uniden name and wouldn't be recognized as one of their scanners. It would also make it very inconvenient for scanner users looking to discuss an RadioShack scanners since they would have to read through a list of several dozen scanners to find which company made their scanner even though it has always been branded as a RadioShack scanner.

As for the biggest reason I believe it is very appropriate to keep the current setup is that the Whistler forums redirects to the GRE forums automatically, but still exists as a category for future expansion. Since the products they are making are essentially the same as what GRE was making, there is a larger basis for community technical support regarding these radios in the GRE forums since many of the core issues will likely remain the same (e.g. programming, sensitivity issues, object-oriented memory, etc). If you split the Whistler models to its own forums, then the people who own GRE products are likely to become less involved in helping Whistler owners due to the hassle even though they basically have the same product.
