Hello all.

Have a question regarding the WS1040. A friend has recently purchased his scanner due to his friend owning one. Both sit in the exact same spot with the scanners and one has an issue with receive and signal loss. The other, his scanner works A 1. What could be causing this issue and, can it be something that can be fixed in the programming? I suggested he may want to call Whistler right away and advise, perhaps returning for a replacement scanner. He has the receive / signal loss problem often and is frustrated even after trying different antennas as a solution. If any one has heard if this is a known issue with some of these WS 1040s or not, would be helpful.

Thanks.

Is the scanner receiving transmissions fine, but the signal bars are constantly showing low? What I mean by this is that the signal bars looks low (like 1-3 bars), but the transmissions themselves are coming in clearly. In some cases someone can mistakenly program the wrong values for the RSSI signal strength meter which gives the impression that you have a signal issue when it is actually fine. You can verify this by going in Expert Setting by pressing PGM, FUNC, F3 (GLOB), and locating the RSSI Sig Cal menu. The RSSI Bar 1 setting should be at 190 for the WS1040.

Does the signal improve when you gently push the top of the antenna towards the back of the scanner? A sharp impact to the antenna can cause the internal wiring to the antenna port to break. This means that the antenna is effectively not connected to the rest of the scanner. Pushing on it can restore this connection temporarily for troubleshooting, but you will absolutely want to have this scanner sent back for a replacement.
