Hello everyone. I'm thinking about getting a scanner so I can listen to police, sheriff and fire in my area. I don't have $600 to spend on a Whistler TRX 1 &2. Was thinking about the Whistler WS 1065. Just wondering if this will work for me in my area. The area I live in is Ashland County in Ohio. Thanks for your input

Looking at the database page for your county, the WS1065 (or it's and it's handheld sibling the WS1040), should cover most of your county. There are some conventional channels listed, but based on the notes, apparently most radio traffic is on the statewide system, MARCS-IP. That system is P25 Phase I, which the WS1065 can handle.

I do see that Loudonville PD & FD are shown as using DMR, which the WS1065 cannot receive. However, I see that their PD does have a talkgroup on MARC. I don't see the FD listed on MARCS.

You might get a more definitive answer if you request that your post be moved to the Ohio forum. Someone in or near your location would be more likely to see it there, & perhaps confirm what the database page shows. To do that, do not start a new thread. Instead, click on the Report link in the lower left corner of your post. You can request that a moderator move this for you.

That's the way to do this type of scanner research...

The WS1065 is a great choice for Ashland County. There are bo simulcast issues to deal with and the audio on those units is superb.

It is far faster and easier to use programming software than to program the scanner manually using the menus. Being a premium subscriber, you will be able to download directly from the Radio Reference database. There are 3 software programs available for the WS1065 (ARC500, Win500, and PSREdit500). I would avoid Win500. Some members have had problems getting keys after paying for them and the author seems to have vanished. ARC500 and PSREdit500 are both excellent programs and have a free trial period to determine which one you like better. I use Butel ARC500 Basic to program my scanners. What is your city in Ashland County? There are 3 sites on the MARCS trunked system for your county.

Hi tvengr. Thanks for the programming tips. I'll certainly use software. I'm computer savvy so I don't expect any problems using software. I live in Ashland. I also live close to Mansfield and Wooster so I'll probably program all three areas. Is life flight for Samaritan UH hospital in the marcs system

Samaritan UH hospital is listed under Ashland County in the MARCS database. Also near the top of the MARCS Database listing is a category listing "Medical Transportation" Look through the list for the numerous services on MARCS, i.e LifeFlight, etc..
