Can anybody really review the WS-1080 and determine if it'd be worth upgrading to a WS-1080 from a RS Pro-106?

Sure, real simple.

1. If you don't have a Phase II System to monitor there is no need to upgrade.
2. If you are concerned about getting repairs done to your Pro-106 then upgrade.
3. If you find that your 20 scanlist limit and memory limit on the Pro-106 is too small then upgrade.

I have both the PSR-500 and the PSR 800. No Phase II systems here and I still prefer the 500 over the 800 and use the 500 as a base unit and 800 mobile.

Bottom line is the sound, sensitivity etc between a 106 and 1080 is negligible.

I never used this feature myself when I had a PSR-500, but I think the manual said you can have 20 virtual memories giving you 400 scan lists.

The 400 number sounds good but it isn't realistic. If you only use 2 virtual memories and you need to use 2 scanlists 1 in VM1 and 1 in VM2, what do you do?

The biggest difference I see is with simulcast systems. The 1080 handles the East Bay system in California well where my 106 was hit or miss. On analog or no simulcast systems they perform the same. If you travel lots having the SD with the full database is an added bonus.

On the flip side the 500 / 106 allows for much more custom control and discovering new systems that are not in the DB. I also miss the quick keys for scan lists.

That said both are good but which is best is a matter of opinion.

Create a third virtual memory and put both lists on it. ;)

Of course, you could run out of room sometime.

That only works if you have a functioning crystal ball. Mine is wrong more than it is correct.

I have a PSR500 and PSR800 (the equivalent scanners as described above) and .. that decision is pretty simple.

The PSR800 is a much better scanner ... I use my PSR500 for Unitrunker cause honestly it is great .. but the PSR800 is just so much better. The PSR500 was good in its day .. but there is just better now. That better being the PSR800 or even better .. WS-1080 due to the support offered.
