I was imprecise in my terminology DonS. When I wrote "speaker out" I thought people would understand that I meant "speaker output". Which is what the list below refers to as "External speaker output on rear panel of main unit". Which in the radio parlance I'm used to is a "speaker out". Not a speaker physically pointing out of the rear panel.

IOWAGUY1603, we don't have to wait to find out who was right. ME! :D

I would.

  • USB jack on front panel (main unit, not "removable" part).
  • Headphone jack on front panel (main unit, not "removable" part).
[*]External speaker output on rear panel of main unit
  • Internal speaker points out of top of main unit
  • SD card ("standard" size, not micro or mini) on main unit behind removable panel.
  • Main unit and removable panel either a) attached to each other (magnetic, with a latch), with a direct (no cable) connection, or b) separate from each other, connected via 8-pin RJ-45 (i.e. a plain old Cat-5 cable... I'm using a 25' Cat-5 cable I had lying around)
  • Removable panel has power button, volume/squelch control, and PSR-800 LCD, LED, and buttons. Volume/squelch knob is a rotary encoder that can also perform up/down/select functions (i.e. in menus).

I did understand "speaker out" to mean "a jack on the rear panel for an external speaker".

Regarding "base vs. mobile"...
The PSR-600 had a removable "outer shell" and came with a DIN-sized sleeve, intended for mounting in a DIN-sized hole in a vehicle. It also came with a bracket and knobs for mounting on a desktop, wall, shelf, etc.
The beta PSR-900 I have includes only the bracket and knobs. The outer shell of the PSR-900 is not to be removed. If mounting in a vehicle, the intent seems to be mounting in some "remote" location - like under a seat, in the trunk, etc. - anyplace but in the dash.

"The wires are included?" "It's connected to the rest of the radio by a cable." (meaning, yes, of course they're included - you can't use the radio without them)

Actually, you can use the radio without the cable. If the front panel is left attached (magnetically, with a mechanical latch) to the main unit, the two pieces are electrically connected. The cable is only necessary if the two parts are separated.

DonS,

Agreed, that was my take on it too.

The radio will work when the faceplate is connected.

When the faceplate is disconnected you MUST electrically connect it to the main unit body with a cable.

Therefore the statement that you can't use the radio without the cable only applies when the faceplate is detached. It is the qualifying condition.

And I'm still working on maximum length for that cable. So far, I'm up to 25 feet of Cat-5. I'm looking for my longer Cat-5 cable (packed away in a move a few years ago).

EDIT: found the longer cable. Now I know that 100 feet of Cat-5 works. (It does get a bit difficult to hear the scanner from that far away, though.)

Any other cool surprises you can tell us about Don? Are we looking at the same menu system and feature set that is currently running in the PSR-800?

Don,

I'm sure this is going to be a VERY silly question, but are you affiliated with Whistler? How do you know so much about the WS1095

Thanks Larry. Great link and there's a lot of neat stuff there. I have known about Don Starr but I'm running on fumes here and my tired brain didn't make the connection between Don Starr and DonS - major "DUH!!!" on my part!

Even still, I ALSO didn't notice his post on this very thread where he said he has a "beta PSR-900". Maybe I should just call it a night before I put my OTHER foot in my mouth :(

PSR-1000 on the inside

Whistler's new scanner will only look like the old GRE model on the outside it will be all new on the inside.
GRE had been working on new scanner for quite some time. This can be seen in the CPU updater U1.7
PSR-800 Application dated November 22, 2012. Just have a little look at this.

Before attempting to use this utility, please ensure that you can transfer data
between the %s and your PC, using the USB cable. A good test would
be to acquire one of the data-management programs available, and perform a few
upload and download operations between such a program and your scanner.
The steps described in this utility are written with the presumption that you
already have the USB-Scanner Programming cable and are familiar with using
that cable to connect your %s to your computer.
Please be assured that you cannot 'destroy' your radio with this utility - if an
update operation fails, the scanner's 'Boot' code will clean up and prompt you
for a CPU load until the operation is successful.
Are you ready to proceed with this update utility? While holding down the scanner's MENU key, attach the USB cable to the %s.

Nothing to do with the WS1095 (or unreleased PSR-900). Just a dump of a Nov. 2012 updater code.

As for the other models on the Radio Shack web site, to me it looks like nothing new, only clones. Same models, new labels, new paint job.

And still no FCC certification to verify that with.

I'm really chomping at the bit for a new digital Whistler but I'd rather make the leap to a Phase II model in one fell swoop as opposed to getting a Phase I now and shelling out again later for a Phase II. This is making me look at used PSR-800 units more and more every day.

Great I'm going to end up spending over $600 on a 436HP an then find out the 1095 does DMR!

That my friends would be a shame!

That will probably not be the case but ya never know;)
