If you bought the HP 1 specifically to listen to your local police, you might want to hold off on the Extreme upgrade.

The database lists the police as encrypted.

Assuming haven't updated the database in it, info your using is from 2014 era! Also the original firmware.
See updates that have been made since then, Owensboro Public Safety and Services (P25) Trunking System Latest Updates

How old is your database in that home patrol?
From the main screen, press menu --> advanced menu --> press the scroll down arrow --> version information --> Database Version

Be sure to have all you 911 "Service types" selected as well.

All good info. And just in case you happen to be a newbie to the hobby, anything encrypted will NOT be understood on a scanner…. That means analogue or digital. And there are no workarounds that will modify a scanner to do so. You may have just bought a scanner that you don’t have a need for if it’s the local police you were needing. Before ANY scanner is purchased it’s always advisable to compile a list of what it is you want to monitor, and then check that against what the scanner will hear. Too many times people buy these things and realize after the fact they don’t recieve a particular band or service. Your HP2 is a good choice however, you will have years of enjoyment hearing that which is not encrypted.

Alrighty, but this still won't allow the OP to pick up their local police which was their main concern ;)

Obviously not. :giggle: Would be nice if it could, updating will include all the updates that would include other 911 in the clear to be sent for police activities, in turn would know what the police are doing.

Bass akwards? Why? There are agencies to do just that. I for the life of me don’t understand it either but they do it.
Cause your ERT and tac channels is typically where you go to when doing stuff that’s all secrete squirrel and you don’t want us peasants and the big bad criminals to know your plan.

Seems backwards to me….

Encrypts dispatch, but leaves everything else in the clear???

That’s almost bass akwards
That's exactly incorrect. "Dispatch" doesn't mean just the call center and dispatchers, it also means the cars on the street replying to the call center.

Right or wrong, many agencies do this now for many reasons.

The thing is like the Local Sheriff, people hear the delayed traffic on a scanner app and show up before the police. Makes them look bad that it takes them so long to get there. Therefore they quote "Officer Safety" to make them look better. Henderson, KY enc all LE traffic.
