Not including the price why did you purchase a pro 2096, 96, 106 or the 197.

I bought mine for the 800 digital trunk tracking.

I have a 2096 for 800 and about 8 vhf frequencies. The 96 is programed with a lot more frequencies but I only scan the 800 and vhf bands and the other frequencies are for whenever I feel like it or when we travel out of state. The 96 goes with me most places and the 2096 is on 24/7 at home.

My area is about to go digital, so I decided it was time to get another one and move one to the vehicle. That will give me 2 for the shack, 1 for the nitestand and 1 to go....

I got my -500 because my local police department was going digital (and I wanted to listen to traffic on the statewide digital trunked system).

I bought my Pro-197 because I wanted the digital capabilities. Our town bought a new VHF system with one channel that they call DTAC. I hoped it was a digital channel and not encryted. I lucked out because it is P25 NAC. Now that I have it; I mostly hear them going to Subway or Pizza Hut. They occasionally talk about a case on there but very seldom.

Price, $299 was hard to turn down and it turned out my 2055 was deaf compared to the new 197. Nothing digital yet, except the FT Lewis system but its fun to have the capability.

I bought my PRO-197s because of the "object oriented" programming interface. I *love* the new system, so much better than the old banks-and-channels-and-subgroups system. Digital isn't a huge interest to me right now, as I'm not interested in the few things that are digital around here. (Or should I say, the only things I care to hear that have gone digital are either encrypted or Provoice so it's a moot point anyway.) If GRE would have put the OO interface into a non-digital scanner, I'd have gone for it instead.

I went with the RS scanners over GRE models, solely because of the price during the Christmas sale.

And I got my PRO-106, because I had purchased three 197s at the $400 post-Thanksgiving sale price then got a "price protection" refund when they dropped to $300 - thus giving me exactly enough (with two cents left over) to buy the 106! :D

Well get this, it's kinda funny why I had to finally upgrade my PRO-60 and go digital.

I have a PRO-60 that did fine where I used to live in the outlying north county of San Diego. Of course it didn't pick up the new digital stuff, but San Diego was some 50mi away anyway, and I wouldn't have heard them so I never opted to even go for a digital. However, I moved to a much more 'rural area' of Kings county in the central valley of California which I have used the term 'hicksville' compared to the San Diego north county where I used to live. ANYWAY, all the sheriff/police channels around here are P25. BUT, all the other bigger counties around here like Fresno & Tulare are just FM.

So, what's a 'rural' fella to do?

Anyway, going from a PRO-60 to this new PRO-106 is like upgrading from an IBM-PC (8086 or 8088) to a modern day PC. Although, I'm not sure why the PRO-106 doesn't have the frequency range that the PRO-60 has, so that just means that the PRO-60 still has some life left in it.

Pro 197

I purchased the 197 as most of the PD's in RI have gone on to the new statewide 800 MHZ digital system (RISCON P25). The selling point for the 197 was that it also included the 380mhz-400mhz band which a number of Fire Depts that are on military bases are required to switch to (including my current Dept).
